About the role:

This position is tasked with the preparation of microscope slides to enable the pathologist to render a quality diagnosis. 


Your responsibilities include:

  • Accession surgical pathology specimens into the Laboratory Information System (LIS)
  • Properly label Specimens components (jars, cassettes, slides, etc.) in accordance to laboratory procedures.
  • Embed formalin fixed tissues in accordance to the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) tissue orientation protocols
  • Perform microtomy of formalin fixed paraffin embedded (FFPE) in accordance to SOP protocols.
  • Performs routine maintenance and cleaning of instruments and document findings
  • Maintains a clean working environment
  • Maintains working inventory required for tissue sectioning of FFPE blocks
  • Prepare reagents, including stains solutions, graded alcohols and bulk reagents according to proper specifications
  • Perform more complex procedures for processing and staining tissues, including special stains (SS), immunohistochemistry (IHC), and other special projects as assigned
  • Print slides using the slide printer

    Ensure that all stained slides are distributed to pathologists in an efficient and timely manner

  • Perform and document all equipment quality control and preventive maintenance
  • Support Histology Management by communication supply needs. Document receipt of supplies and the date reagents are put in use
  • Practice good documentation practice
  • Maintain filing systems to include specimen, FFPE tissue blocks, prepared slides and related documents
  • Enforce proper chemical and biological hygiene practices to ensure a safe and compliant working environment
  • Perform chemical hazardous waste disposal in accordance to regulatory guidelines
  • Assist in duties as deemed necessary by the Histology Supervisor, Pathology Manager, or Medical Director
  • Quality Assurance:  Complies with quality control policies and SOPs to ensure all aspects of laboratory operation are performed in accordance with accepted standards and applicable laws for clinical laboratories
  • Other duties as assigned


What we’re looking for:

Basic Qualifications

  • Ability to travel via automobile and/or airplane.
  • Ability to view video display terminals <18” away from face for up to 4 hours/day.
  • Ability to operate a computer keyboard
  • Ability to sit for up to 4 hours at a time.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
  • Ability to multi-task well.
  • Attention to detail in dealing with multiple minute specimens.


Experience & Education

  • AA, AS or BS degree from a regionally accredited college/university, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience required
  • Must satisfy CLIA regulations to perform high complexity testing
  • HT(ASCP) certification is required within 18 months of beginning employment in the state of Georgia 


Preferred Qualifications

  • HTL(ASCP) certification preferred.

  • The laboratory environment has an inherent risk of exposure to blood-bourne pathogens, and other pathogens such as TB, along with the risks associated with hazardous chemical exposure.All safety policies and procedures must be observed to minimize these risks.
  • Identifies and reports current or potential unsafe/unhealthy practices and conditions to the appropriate Supervisor.
  • Complies with, and participates in, all quality control and quality assurance policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Reports all accidents, near accidents, injuries, work-related illnesses, special occurrences, and other emergencies in which the employee is involved to the appropriate Supervisor
