About the role:


The Lead Histotechnician (Histotech IV) is tasked with the preparation of microscope slides to enable the pathologist to render a quality diagnosis. Aid supervisors and Managers with the daily workflow and troubleshooting in the laboratory.


Your responsibilities include:

  • Accession surgical pathology specimens into the Laboratory Information System (LIS)
  • Properly label Specimens components (jars, cassettes, slides, etc.) in accordance to laboratory procedures.
  • Embed formalin fixed tissues in accordance to the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) tissue orientation protocols
  • Perform microtomy of formalin fixed paraffin embedded (FFPE) in accordance to SOP protocols.
  • Performs routine maintenance and cleaning of instruments and document findings
  • Maintains a clean working environment
  • Maintains working inventory required for tissue sectioning of FFPE blocks
  • Prepare reagents, including stains solutions, graded alcohols and bulk reagents according to proper specifications
  • Perform more complex procedures for processing and staining tissues, including special stains (SS), immunohistochemistry (IHC), and other special projects as assigned
  • Print slides using the slide printer
  • Ensure that all stained slides are distributed to pathologists in an efficient and timely manner
  • Perform and document all equipment quality control and preventive maintenance
  • Support Histology Management by communication supply needs. Document receipt of supplies and the date reagents are put in use
  • Practice good documentation practice
  • Maintain filing systems to include specimen, FFPE tissue blocks, prepared slides and related documents
  • Enforce proper chemical and biological hygiene practices to ensure a safe and compliant working environment
  • Perform chemical hazardous waste disposal in accordance to regulatory guidelines
  • Assist in duties as deemed necessary by the Histology Supervisor, Pathology Manager, or Medical Director
  • Quality Assurance:  Complies with quality control policies and SOPs to ensure all aspects of laboratory operation are performed in accordance with accepted standards and applicable laws for clinical laboratories
  • Able to troubleshoot and resolve moderately complex problems
  • Trains and serves as a resource to other employees
  • Assess competency of other employee is specific tasks
  • Assist with orientation, education, training, and overall development of Histotechnicians.
  • Identify and solve technical, quality, and departmental concerns in concurrence with Histology Supervisor, Pathology Lab Manager, or Medical Director.
  • Exercises independent judgement in dealing with procedure and technical problems.
  • Participate in Quality Assurance (QA) Reviews.
  • Assist with laboratory accreditation inspection preparations.
  • Assist with peer competency assessments.
  • Develop, test, and establish new laboratory procedures.
  • Coordinate their implementation and evaluation.
  • Identify, troubleshoot, and solve complex problems.
  • Assist other laboratory supervisory personnel in developing and monitoring the quality of laboratory procedures to ensure results remain within established control levels.
  • Assist with the successful completion of NCEPs
  • Act as a SME for IHC, embedding, and microtomy.
  • Involved in continuing education of histotechnicians
  • Other duties as assigned


What we’re looking for:

Minimum Requirements:

  • AA, AS or BS degree from a regionally accredited college/university, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience required
  • Must satisfy CLIA regulations to perform high complexity testing
  • 5+ years experience in Histology
  • HT(ASCP) certification required
  • HTL(ASCP) certification preferred

  • Complies with, and participates in, all quality control and quality assurance policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Reports all accidents, near accidents, injuries, work-related illnesses, special occurrences, and other emergencies in which the employee is involved to the appropriate Supervisor
