Principal R&D Engineer


About the role:

We have an exciting opportunity for a Principal R&D Engineer supporting Structural Heart projects within the Interventional Cardiology division. Structural Heart is an exciting growth driver for BSC.  This role will utilize a variety of new and proven technologies to deliver life-changing medical devices to patients and clinicians in support of BSC’s mission.  This position supports a major product category with high visibility which will provide the right candidate with excellent growth potential.


The Principal R&D role will help lead next generation product design activities within the TAVR accessories & adjunctive technologies portfolio.  The role will involve coordination and execution of design & development activities including, early concept development, gathering VOC, understanding design tradeoffs and implementing manufacturable solutions in compliance with design controls policies.  This senior technical role is expected to help lead small teams through the product development process while providing work direction & mentorship to Jr. Engineers.


Your responsibilities include:

  • Create a strong team culture around high expectations & high performance
  • Facilitate crisp decision making around key technical issues
  • Lead technology integration & knowledge transfer within domain of responsibility
  • Provide clear communication to stakeholders at key technical updates
  • Leverage internal/external partners as necessary to achieve project objectives
  • Lead the design & execution of structured experimental plans to drive data based decisions
  • Understand anatomy, clinical use cases and user interface requirements to drive design decisions.
  • Develop novel improvements to products or processes resulting in expansion of BSC’s Intellectual Property portfolio in key strategic areas.
  • Successfully completes engineering work in one or more of the following: technology development, product design and development, test method development, specification development, bench & preclinical studies.
  • Assess the feasibility and soundness of alternative engineering processes, products, or equipment.
  • Interface with Physicians/Cath Lab personnel to obtain feedback on concepts and performance of new devices.
  • Translates customer needs into product requirements and design specifications.
  • Works cooperatively with process development, quality, manufacturing, regulatory, clinical, and marketing on complex projects to ensure project success.
  • May train and/or provide work direction to technicians and entry-level engineers.
  • Up to 20% travel may be required.


What we’re looking for:

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS in Mechanical, Electrical, or Biomedical Engineering
  • 6 years of work experience, primarily in medical device or related field
  • Strong mechanical engineering & design skills
  • Knowledge of GD&T, tolerance analysis, and Monte Carlo simulations
  • Knowledge of FEA and properites of medical materials
  • Competent in risk-based design (FMEA, etc.)
  • Solid clinical knowledge and experience in cardiovascular anatomy.
  • Ability to provide technical leadership as it relates to product and process design
  • Ability to draw conclusions and make recommendations based on technical inputs from multiple and varied sources.
  • Excellent organizational, communication and collaboration skills.
  • Familiarity with IEC60601
  • Self-motivated
  • Detail oriented
  • Experience with process engineering/manufacturing methods/design for manufacturability (DFM)


Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong leadership and commuication skills
  • Class II or Class III Medical Device product development experience
  • Ability to research literature and develop clinical understanding with technical credibility to develop a strategy for regulatory submission
  • Experience developing and validating test methods
  • Solid experimental design and statistical analysis knowledge
  • Experience with BSC quality systems
  • Ability to understand complex systems
  • Understanding of a systems approach to engineering
