Principal R&D Systems Engineer


About the role:

  • Boston Scientific is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Principal R&D Systems Engineer.  The role will be dedicated to integrating a BTG product of the Interventional Oncology (IO) franchise.
  • As an R&D integration lead, you will be responsible for leading a high performing R&D team to evaluate and integrate existing products and their supporting design documentation into the BSC quality system. Working with cross-functional team members, you will develop strategies for aligning quality systems while maintaining product and business continuity. As a key growth driver for PI, this role will come with visibility to key leadership, and as a result, communication & leadership will be paramount. The role will include strategic planning for integration of the technology & DHF/DMR R&D deliverables.
  • The successful candidate will provide technical direction and system level understanding regarding design and development of electronic medical systems.  This candidate will provide technical guidance to an interdisciplinary team of SW/Electrical/Mechanical professionals. 


Your responsibilities include:

  • Partner with Quality, Process Development, Operations and other cross-functional team members from both legacy BSC and BTG to develop project integration plans tailored to the unique needs of the product or site
  • Actively lead and engage in the Discovery phase of BTG design control practices and documentation to identify commonalities and gaps with BSC systems, including prints, CAD, and risk management documents
  • Develop and provide guidance regarding integration strategies and approaches
  • Coordinate, manage, and document the project goals and progress of an R&D team and recommend appropriate integration actions
  • Deliver functional project updates to leadership, representing the voice of R&D
  • Take an active role in the organization to identify and mitigate issues; work cross-functionally to resolve issues and challenges
  • Lead integration of product technologies with respect to mechanical, electrical, firmware and software for Electronic Medical Equipment projects.
  • Responsible for providing technical direction and system level expertise for the design, development, and sustaining of complex electronic medical equipment systems, including sensors, embedded systems, algorithms, hardware, software, and associated disposable medical devices.
  • Guide definition of system requirements, system specifications, input/output processes and working parameters by using systems engineering best practices.
  • Develop and implement knowledge transfer strategy for BTG products into BSC technical community
  • Mentor extended team members and help them develop a path to achieve integration goals
  • Create a culture of high expectations, accountability, strong engineering fundamentals with your BTG counterparts


What we’re looking for:

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS/MS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science
  • 6+ years of engineering experience developing mixed Hardware or Software systems
  • Experience with Boston Scientific Design Controls & Risk Management practices
  • Personal drive, individual accountability & a strong bias for action
  • Experience leading other team members and building effective cross-functional relationships across multiple disciplines
  • Strong personal credibility & excellent communication skills
  • An independent critical thinker; willingness to challenge status quo
  • Self-motivated with a passion for solving problems


Preferred Qualifications

  • Proven project leader with experience leading teams on high-visibility/high-priority new technology ventures
  • Comfortable working ‘in the gray’; known for innovative, out of the box thinking to identify new approaches to meet requirements
  • Experience motivating a high performance technical team
  • Adept at developing relationships
  • Experience with technology acquisition & integration
  • Familiar with systems verification/validation including SW/HW test automation
  • Medical Device systems product development experience, including experience in design controls with a focus on user needs, intended use, system requirements, system design and traceability.
  • Knowledge of application security and usability regulations
