R&D Director – Left Atrial Appendage Closure (LAAC)


About the role:

  • This is an exciting opportunity to join Boston Scientific as a Director of Research & Development responsible for a key growth driver in the Interventional Cardiology business.
  • Technical Leader with global responsibility for the LAAC R&D portfolio including exploratory research, technology development and commercial product development. 
  • Primary responsibilities include directing all aspects of R&D for the LAAC franchise.  This will include developing the R&D portfolio strategy, product & technology development, influencing franchise & divisional strategy, supporting Business Development (M&A) activity and developing organizational talent.
  • The ideal candidate will have good related medical device business acumen with an understanding of the financial and market implications of new technology development. 


Your responsibilities include:

  • Lead a group or team of employees in the achievement of R&D organizational goals relating to LAAC based on Maple Grove, MN.
  • Identify new strategies and projects for the investigation, design, and implementation of new or improved products and/or applications.
  • Identify future technology and intellectual property critical to future business growth and drives implementation.   Active participant in the due diligence process.

  • Collaboratively determines short and long-term product strategies and technologies.

  • Proactively review future technologies and plans needed resources with appropriate technical skills either through external search or training to prepare.
  • Develop and ensure budgets and schedules meet business needs/objectives.
  • Champion new programs or refocuses existing initiatives based on knowledge of unmet clinical needs of customers and develops proposals for new projects.
  • Act as entry point and contact for external entities approaching BSC for partnership.
  • Support Business Development (M&A strategy) including: target recommendations, strategic rationale, financial case, target valuation, deal structure, deal valuation, and integration planning.
  • Support Strategic Planning process to include competitive analysis, market sizing and growth rates, evaluation and recommendation of business strategies and tactics.
  • Develop effective and persuasive presentations for Executive Leadership engagements


What we’re looking for:

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS degree in Engineering or applicable field
  • 12 or more years of technical professional experience
  • 8 or more years people management experience
  • Well versed in patent and intellectual property issues and able to coordinate with the legal team.
  • Ability to travel globally up to 25%


Preferred Qualifications

  • BS/MS degree in Biomedical, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering
  • Medical device experience
  • LAAC or Structural Heart Therapies experience
  • Project Management skills to lead multiple projects at the same time
