R&D Director – Structural Heart Valves – TAVR Core Products


About the role:

  • Executive with global responsibility for Structural Heart product lines, technology and specialized functions relating to TAVR, and TAVR Accessories
  • This is an exciting opportunity to join Boston Scientific as a Director in Research and Development. The role will be responsible for a key part of our Structural Heart Valve business.
  • Utilize a variety of new and proven technologies to deliver life-changing systems to patients and clinicians in support of BSC’s mission. 
  • The position includes both development and franchise responsibility for several product lines, as well as organizational development and growth of a new competency.
  • Primary responsibilities include the identification, development, and implementation of strategic initiatives for new technologies, maintaining franchise structure, and management development.


Your responsibilities include:

  • Direct the activities of the SH TAVR Accessories Product Development R&D group consistent with the divisional global priority list. This is not limited to and may include test method development, vendor engineering liaison, international standards knowledge and compliance, SH product engineering excellence, enhancing customer relationships.
  • Lead a group or team of employees in the achievement of SHV R&D organizational goals relating to TAVR and TAVR accessories across Maple Grove, Galway and other SH sites (ie Santa Rosa).
  • Identifies new strategies and projects for the investigation, design, and implementation of new or improved products and/or applications.
  • Identifies future technology and intellectual property critical to future business growth and drives implementation.   Active participant in the due diligence process.
  • Leads technology advancements for the department.
  • Creates and champions new efforts.
  • Creates an entrepreneurial environment.
  • Ensures that new product and processing technologies are ready for new product development efforts.
  • Establish a test method development group to advance and validate cutting edge test methods for the SH division.
  • Collaboratively determines short and long-term product strategies and technologies.
  • Encourages problem-solving processes leading to solutions that can be leveraged across divisions.
  • Ensure sharing of initiatives/ideas and accomplishments across the divisions.
  • Lead a group or team of employees in the achievement of organizational goals.  Guide, coach, direct, and develop direct reports, and if applicable, drive those practices throughout their organization. Foster a diverse workplace that enables all participants to contribute to their full potential in pursuit of organizational objectives.
  • Have extensive internal contacts across BSC and external contacts with physicians and/or industry specialists.
  • Responsible for succession planning and the development and implementation of retention strategies.
  • Proactively reviews future technologies and plans needed resources with appropriate technical skills either through external search or training to prepare.
  • Develops and ensures budgets and schedules meet corporate requirement.
  • Champions new programs or refocuses existing initiatives based on knowledge of unmet clinical needs of customers and develops proposals for new projects.
  • Act as entry point and contact for external entities approaching BSC for partnership.
  • Conduct and/or support deal analysis to include: target recommendations, strategic rationale, financial case, target valuation, deal structure, deal valuation, and integration planning.
  • Articulate strategic fit, assessment, and valuation of strategic opportunities.
  • Support divisional Strategic Planning process as needed to include competitive analysis, market sizing and growth rates, evaluation and recommendation of business strategies and tactics.
  • Work across divisional and corporate functions to accomplish objectives.
  • Develop effective and persuasive presentations for divisional leadership and EC level meetings.
  • Act as internal consultant to Marketing and Business Development for strategic questions around market modeling, assessment of competitive threats, and resource allocations


What we’re looking for:

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS degree in Engineering or applicable field
  • 12 or more years of technical professional experience
  • 8 or more years people management experience
  • Ability to travel globally up to 20%


Preferred Qualifications

  • BS/MS degree in Biomedical or Mechanical Engineering
  • Medical device experience
  • Structural Heart Therapies experience
  • Project Management skills to lead multiple projects at the same time
