R&D Principal Engineer: Fatigue Lab – Maple Grove, MN

 

About the role:

We have an exciting opportunity for an R&D Engineer with a strong bias for action, supporting Structural Heart projects within the Interventional Cardiology division. Structural Heart is an exciting growth driver for BSC.  This role will utilize a variety of new and proven technologies to deliver life-changing medical devices to patients and clinicians in support of BSC’s mission.  This role supports a major product line with high visibility which will provide the right candidate excellent growth potential.

 

The engineer will drive activities of a mechanical fatigue lab, working with multiple projects to design appropriate methods, fixtures, and analyze/troubleshoot failures.  The role involves setting the strategy for multiple projects, including mining of clinical data, determination of the most appropriate methods, establishing boundary conditions, development of test fixtures and inspection procedures, and driving the execution of verification testing to achieve project goals.  These test methods and resulting product technologies will be leveraged for years to come to keep BSC growing and a leader in new Interventional Cardiology areas.

 

Your responsibilities include:

  • Determine program needs, establishing a multi-year strategy to support current and future projects
  • Interacting with multiple groups (FEA, project teams, solid modelers, test lab personnel) to develop test methods for quantifying product fatigue performance
  • Set a strategy for the development of a virtual clinical library that can be used for visualization as well as determination of clinically relevant dimensions and deformations
  • Mentor and drive the activities of junior level engineers and technicians to satisfy project goals
  • Use established and new mechanisms of action to develop new fatigue methods
  • Determine appropriate test method boundary conditions, informed by FEA, clinical analysis, etc
  • Analysis of failed samples to identify characteristics of fatigue fractures versus other modes (i.e., tensile overload)
  • Drive the understanding of Nitinol fatigue testing throughout the organization and project teams
  • Participating on external test standard committees
  • Document work in BSC quality system

 

What we’re looking for:

Minimum Qualifications

  • MS in Mechanical or Materials Engineering with 10+ years of experience in device/materials development, or equivalent experience
  • Understanding of CAD systems and Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
  • Advanced problem-solving skills
  • Ability to draw conclusions and make recommendations based on technical inputs from multiple and varied sources.
  • Organizational, communication and collaboration skills

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with Nitinol
  • Implant design experience
  • Strong leadership and commuication skills
  • Experience performing FEA
  • Experience drawing conclusions using statistical tools (DOE, ANOVA, t-tests, analysis of transformed data, etc)
  • Test method development and validation experience
  • Solid experimental design and statistical analysis knowledge
  • Experience with BSC quality systems
