About the role:

Boston Scientific is seeking a highly motivated engineer with experience in fiber laser and diode pumped solid state laser development to join a medical laser research and development team developing first in class and best in class technologies across multiple procedures in Urologic surgery and other medical fields.


Your responsibilities include:

  • Performs research and development functions and proposes new product concepts and ideas; prepares design concepts and builds the initial prototype products*
  • Keeps abreast of industry trends, competitive activity, and new technologies
  • Work with internal/external suppliers and design partners, establish a sound relationship and develop optimal technical solutions with them
  • Performs lab testing, conducts statistical analysis and summarizes data and present and publish reports and proposals.
  • Assure all designs meet reliability, cost, manufacturability and serviceability requirements.
  • Domestic and international travel (5-10%).


What we're looking for in you:

Basic Qualifications

  • BS/MS degrees in Optics, physics or equivalent engineering field
  • 5+ years of direct hands‐on fiber laser/amplifier development and prototyping experience including designing, building and characterizing laser modules
  • Need to have theoretical modeling and simulation for laser design and beam reshaping, simulation tool knowledge and experience like Zemax, Matlab, etc is a plus
  • Experience on high power fiber laser build process and tools, e.g., fusion/splicing process, thermal management, modal stability control, fiber and critical fiber components handling, splicer, stripper, etc
  • Experience on high power fiber laser components, e.g., pump sources, gain fibers, beam combiners, gratings, lens, mirrors, etc
  • Direct experience in multiple laser technologies is a plus, e.g., high power fiber lasers, a semiconductor laser, solid state lasers.
  • Experience in estimating design milestones to coordinate team activities for meeting schedules and goals.
  • Knowledge of fiber laser technology, laser and optical design and modeling and validation of the models through comprehensive experimentation and data analysis
  • Knowledge of the laser theory and industry best practices associated with fiber lasers including continuous wave lasers/QCW, pulsed, high peak power fiber, advanced fiber architectures, and thermal handling.
  • Extensive laboratory experience for high power (50W to KW) fiber /DPSS laser development and system optimization, tolerance and performance analysis.
  • Working knowledge on one of the optical modeling programs, such as Zemax
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Strong skills in oral and written communication and the ability to present technical subjects clearly in team meetings and project reviews.
  • High degree comfort with ambiguity in early-phase investigation working with cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment
