The Director of External Communications will have direct oversight and active management of all external communications, including media relations, public relations, financial communications and industry advocacy. This individual will also play a significant role in managing executive communications, crisis preparedness and response communications and regional communications. This role supports the communications needs of Boston Scientific audiences and stakeholders through effective external communications programs to enhance and protect the image and reputation of the corporation and its seven primary business units and key regions around the world. This role is responsible for Boston Scientific's positioning and messaging, enabling the company to speak with a unified, aligned global voice to media, analysts, investors, credit rating agencies, community organizations, regulatory and government agencies, customers and patients. This is a key leadership role that requires a high level of independence and strong cross-functional collaboration and partnership with the marketing teams within the company's business units, communications teams within the key regions, as well as Investor Relations, Government Relations, Legal, Compliance, Clinical, HR and other key teams across the company.

Key Responsibilities
External Communications:
 Enhance and execute the company's comprehensive external communications strategies and messaging focused on increasing the positive awareness and visibility of Boston Scientific and its executives, including the CEO, and is aligned to the company's strategic priorities
 Develop and implement external communications strategies across a variety of business topics, issues and scenarios including regulatory product approvals, product launches, acquisitions, management changes and financial reporting.
 Provide focused monitoring and tracking of emerging issues and the development of timely communications that address these issues proactively through appropriate, consistent and high quality communications and channels
 Utilize existing communication channels and seek new and creative ways to inform and engage external audiences
 Act as a spokesperson and point of contact for media and public on corporate issues
 Provide counsel, guidance and expertise to senior management and business units to protect and enhance the Boston Scientific global brand
 Manage CEO's relationships with media
 Own external communications sections of the company's Crisis Preparedness & Response plan and manage all external communications activities associated with the execution of a crisis plan
 Utilize deep knowledge of external forces shaping the business to enhance senior leadership's communications with industry associations, media, financial constituencies and other key stakeholders
 Leverage expertise in communications strategies, the market and operating environments to capture the voice of Boston Scientific as well as a deep understanding of its audiences and stakeholders.
 Develop executive external communications plans to include media engagements and presentations, multi-media scripts, and media key messages and talking points, to communicate senior leadership's vision, strategies and goals.
 Collaborate with Digital Marketing and Strategic Communications to develop and implement the company's internet presence
 Collaborate with the company's 7 primary businesses to create integrated communications/media relations plans that include strategies for product launches, clinical trials, industry events and other external events
 Work with international colleagues to provide external communications support to the company's regions of Europe; Asia, Middle East and Africa and Latin America
 Develop a corporate media relations plan that includes strategizing story angles, setting up and managing media interviews, building and strengthening media relations, tracking and analyzing media coverage
 Manage the development of news releases announcing product approvals and launches, executive hires and movements and other company news
 Manage the quarterly earnings news release development process and media interviews with key executives, including the CEO
 Ensure the global distribution of all company news releases
 Manage media training for key leaders
 Initiate regular meetings with select key reporters
 Collaborate with colleagues in Strategic Communications and Internal Communications to manage the crisis response and communications
 Build and maintain collaborative relationships with key stakeholders, including industry organizations such as AdvaMed
 Monitor external events and issues impacting the Medical Device industry or specifically Boston Scientific and influence the company's reaction and develop any necessary media statements
 Manage the creation of communication tools that include interview briefing documents and press kits
 Work collaboratively with the other functions to ensure external positioning aligns with other critical areas such as Investor Relations, Regulatory Affairs and Government Affairs
 Establish external communications metrics and track and report progress
 Direct two managers and co-manage a specialist (based in the Natick and Minneapolis offices)
 Manage/maintain external communications budget
 Manage public relations agency
 Extensive travel US and International

Quality Systems Duties and Responsibilities
Builds Quality into all aspects of their work by maintaining compliance to all quality.


 Accomplished communications/public relations professional with 10+ years of global communications experience in large corporations
 Life sciences experience strongly preferred
 Corporate strategy and crisis/issues management experience within a global, healthcare or regulatory framework
 Experience leading, managing and developing a team
 At least 10 years of writing a wide variety of external communications, including news releases, media statements and executive briefing documents and presentations
 Advanced skills in editing, proof reading; ability to explain complicated concepts and materials and make them relevant and understood by a wide variety of audiences
 Demonstrated ability to effectively and calmly present or speak to large and high level audiences that include colleagues, internal clients and executives
 Demonstrated mastery of crafting and communicating a compelling message, with the ability to command the respect of, and influence, a wide variety of audiences
 Ability to collaborate with multiple businesses, functions and regions and provide comprehensive communications counsel and support
 Experience managing quarterly earnings process, including developing financial press releases and briefing documents and FAQs
 Experience working with, influencing and providing communications counsel and support to corporate executives, including the CEO, CFO and General Counsel
 Consultative solution-oriented approach with the ability to interact, partner, influence and communicate effectively with all levels of Boston Scientific]
 Deep understanding of public perception and issues as they pertain to the industry
 In-depth understanding of target audience, highly effective writing style and expertise in high-impact messaging to broad audiences
 Experience with social media channels, including creating and executing innovative social media plans that support external communications strategies
 Excellent project management skills and proven ability to track complex and overlapping milestones
 Strong understanding of the importance of managing multiple priorities and meeting urgent deadlines
 Exceptional leadership skills, provide mentoring and development to a team of communication professionals and able to work effectively through the team to accomplish goals and objectives
 Strong attention to detail
 Strong knowledge of public company business and financial priorities and sensitivities
 Ability to quickly and clearly translate strategic imperatives into compelling company story and narrative
 10 years+ experience managing public relations agencies and budgets
 Ability to travel extensively
