About the role:

The Data Governance Analyst plays a critical role in advancing the organization’s data governance program by ensuring data assets are discoverable, trustworthy, secure, and compliant. This role supports the design, implementation, and execution of data governance frameworks, metadata management, data quality practices, and stewardship workflows across the enterprise. 

 

Working closely with business stakeholders, data stewards, data product managers, IT/data engineering teams, and compliance partners, the Data Governance Analyst helps translate governance strategy into day-to-day operational practices that enable confident decision-making, regulatory compliance, and scalable analytics. 

 

Responsibilities:

Data Governance Strategy & Execution 

  • Support the execution of enterprise data governance strategies, policies, standards, and controls. 
  • Ensure adherence to enterprise data governance guidelines and regulatory requirements. 
  • Participate in governance councils, stewardship forums, and working groups. 
  • Communicate governance priorities, risks, and performance metrics to stakeholders. 

Shape 

Metadata Management & Data Cataloging 

  • Define, curate, and maintain business and technical metadata, including glossaries, taxonomies, classifications, and data definitions. 
  • Lead or support development and maintenance of an enterprise data catalog documenting data lineage, ownership, and governance rules. 
  • Design and implement workflows for metadata enrichment, glossary curation, certification, and stewardship approvals. 
  • Partner with technical teams to integrate metadata solutions with data platforms and analytics tools.

Critical Data Elements (CDEs) & Stewardship Support 

  • Identify and maintain lists of Critical Data Elements (CDEs) for assigned data domains. 
  • Ensure CDE ownership, lineage, quality controls, and classifications are documented and maintained. 
  • Promote standardized definitions, reference data, and consistent data usage across the organization. 
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for assigned business, clinical, research, or operational data domains.

Data Quality Oversight 

  • Define, implement, and maintain proactive and reactive data quality rules. 
  • Profile data and define business rules in collaboration with data owners and technical teams. 
  • Monitor data quality dashboards and scorecards. 
  • Identify, log, triage, and coordinate resolution of data quality issues. 
  • Maintain data quality issue repositories and support remediation and cleansing activities.

Data Lineage, Accessibility & Compliance 

  • Document end-to-end data lineage, including source-to-target mappings and transformations. 
  • Partner with engineering, BI, and architecture teams to ensure accurate lineage and system inventories. 
  • Support data classification efforts (e.g., PII, PHI, sensitive data). 
  • Assist with audit, inspection, and compliance activities by providing governance documentation and evidence.

Stakeholder Enablement & Change Management 

  • Build strong relationships with stakeholders across business, analytics, research, clinical, and IT teams. 
  • Act as a trusted advisor on data governance best practices, tools, and processes. 
  • Drive adoption of governance tools and practices through training sessions, roadshows, documentation, and playbooks. 
  • Support organizational data literacy and governance awareness initiatives. 

Shape 

Tools, Platforms & Delivery Support 

  • Use and administer data governance and metadata platforms (e.g., Informatica, BigID). 
  • Support Agile delivery by participating in backlog refinement, sprint planning, and governance-related work tracking (e.g., Jira, Confluence). 
  • Collaborate with teams using modern data platforms such as Snowflake, Databricks, Redshift, and BI tools. 

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Business, Risk Management, Compliance, Law, or a related field. 
  • 5-7 years of experience in data governance, compliance, risk management, audit, or related disciplines. 
  • Demonstrated experience developing enterprise policies and conducting compliance assessments. 
  • Strong understanding of data governance frameworks and regulatory requirements impacting data. 
  • Proven ability to translate findings into clear, actionable remediation plans. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to influence cross-functional stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Experience in a regulated industry (e.g., healthcare, medtech, life sciences, financial services). 
  • Familiarity with data governance, GRC, or audit tools (e.g., data catalogs, issue management systems). 
  • Knowledge of data privacy, AI governance, and ethical data use frameworks. 
  • Relevant certifications such as CDMP, CIPP, CIPM, CIA, CISA, or similar.
