About the role:
Boston Scientific is seeking a highly motivated and experienced engineer to lead Process Development projects across multiple disciplines. This candidate will provide guidance to an interdisciplinary team of Mechanical, Electrical, Preclinical, and other functional group members from project conception to commercialization.

Your responsibilities will include:
- Lead battery chemistry development: develop new battery chemistries for use in medical devices; identify electrolytes and materials while optimizing performance
- Leverage in-depth understanding of long-term battery performance using advanced analytical techniques
- Develop battery models and performance predictions for impedance rise and longevity in battery performance; develop predictive battery models
- Develop accelerated test methods for proving new battery chemistries; drive shorter development timelines for batteries, through use of modeling and testing
- Lead primary and rechargeable battery design for use in medical devices
- Problem solving through use of laboratory analytics and hands-on teardown
- Create, align, and lead the technical development strategy and project scope to ensure the team hits all major project milestones and meets the clinical and market objectives
- Manage internal and external stakeholder communication on critical technical updates and risk elevation; secure functional management and business leadership agreement on the decisions made and the technical strategy; engage directly with business leaders on project status, issues, and technical gaps/risks
- Mentor, guide, and develop the technical team; work with internal or external partners as necessary to leverage key capabilities as needed; mentor engineers in engineering activities, methodologies, and domain knowledge
- Investigate needs of future product designs and develop process technology plans to support development teams; provide sound business rationale for investment in proposed research or technology
- Study and understand relevant published articles and works, to either apply them directly to our advanced engineering problems or to develop working relationships with parties for accomplishment of same
- Evaluate battery technologies at other Boston Scientific sites and at sites external to Boston Scientific; leverage technologies where applicable; serve as key contact for technical queries from other Boston Scientific sites
- Collaborate with internal and extended team members: form strong partnerships with key team members and stakeholders from the business functions, including quality, design assurance, manufacturing, regulatory, marketing, and clinical sciences
- Work closely with manufacturing to drive DVIP and other improvement projects – financial justification of projects
Required qualifications:
- PhD with emphasis in batteries
- Minimum of 15 years of industry experience in battery design/development
- Expertise in battery materials, including common active materials in lithium metal primary battery cathodes; common active materials in rechargeable lithium-ion electrodes; and common electrolyte salts, solvents, and additives
- Expertise in battery material characterization, including X-ray diffraction, particle size analysis, GCMS, and NMR
- Expertise in battery performance characterization via discharge/cycling, impedance spectroscopy, microcalorimetry, and gas/volume analysis
- Expertise in battery construction in range of form factors
- Battery development experience, specifically CFx and Lithium-Ion chemistries
- Established relationships within the battery development community
- Demonstrated ability as technical lead for new technology development program, experience leading design reviews
Preferred qualifications:
- Medical device experience
- Prior experience with FDA product submissions
- Manufacturing, R&D, and product development experience
- CAPA experience – root cause through verification of effectiveness
- Creation/management and budget adherence – understanding of financial tools/metrics
