About the role
To develop and direct the global strategy and methodologies for effective health economics and market access activities at the divisional level for key products under development or marketed. Director will also serve as functional leader on both HEMA and divisional management teams and represent Boston Scientific HEMA at the divisional level with outside organizations. 

 

Location: Preferred to be in Twin Cities, MN but has the flexibility to be remote with ability to travel as needed for the role.

 

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Management of and leadership in the development and implementation of global health economics and market access activities for the Rhythm Management division across both the Cardiac Rhythm Management and Electrophysiology Franchises.
  • Lead divisional HEMA reimbursement operations including U.S. reimbursement support services and health economic and market access data analytics. 
  • Lead development and execution of practical strategies to secure optimal reimbursement (coding/coverage/payment) for Boston Scientific products and procedures.
  • Lead implementation of tactical planning activities required to achieve health economics and market access strategic objectives (e.g., preparation of economic and coverage dossiers for payer negotiations, new code applications, clinical trial reimbursement, customer reimbursement support, and data analytics).
  • Identify key health economics needs for Boston Scientific platform products, working with health economics and clinical colleagues to determine actions required to collect the evidence needed to define the economic value of Boston Scientific’s technologies.
  • Assess reimbursement opportunities and challenges facing the division’s emerging technologies and commercially marketed products and communicate business impact to senior management.
  • Work with new product development teams to ensure global health economics and reimbursement needs are incorporated into product development plans and timelines; ensure all necessary new product development deliverables are completed on time and on budget.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams in the development and communication of economic value messages to support product adoption.
  • Assess market access opportunities and challenges facing the division’s emerging technologies and commercially marketed products and communicate to senior leadership at the divisional and corporate level.
  • Provide strategic input to portfolio and business development decisions to ensure health economics and market access needs are incorporated into product development plans and timelines; ensure all necessary new product development deliverables are completed on time and on budget.
  • Manage team providing market access support to sales force and key external stakeholders (e.g., hospitals, clinicians, investigator sites, professional societies).
  • Manage provision of appropriate in-service training to sales, marketing, clinical, regulatory, and legal to increase awareness and understanding of health economics and reimbursement competencies and their role in supporting a product’s success.
  • Monitor health policy and regulatory developments that impact the reimbursement of BSC products. Build relationships in key markets with government, physician, hospital, and third-party payer decision makers.
  • Direct economic and pricing strategy development and forecasts and modeling of novel products in the Definition and Scale-up phase of the technology.
  • Build relationships in key markets with government, physician, hospital, and third-party payer decision makers.
  • Support development of staff.
  • Direct and supervise staff as necessary to implement all of the above strategic and tactical initiatives.

What we're looking for:
Successful candidates will have experience in the areas of health economics and market access, facility and physician reimbursement, and/or payer relations. Candidates will exhibit outstanding communication skills with the ability to present information to a broad and diverse group of key stakeholders and will have the ability to convey complex reimbursement strategies to senior management, customers, and commercial and government payers. The role is ideal for candidates who enjoy developing and excreting strategic influence to execute and deploy complex reimbursement and health economics strategies. 

 

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 7-10 years working in the delivery and/or administration of healthcare or the medical device industry.
  • Understanding and application of principles and concepts in health economics, reimbursement and/or market access and be capable of articulating the current and future market access landscape and managing processes requiring multiple information inputs.
  • Understanding of healthcare industry reimbursement environment required.
  • Understanding of hospital, ambulatory surgery center and physician office financial systems and management practices.
  • Ability to present health economic information to both large and small groups in a way that is both easy to understand, credible, and engages the audience.
  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of the healthcare industry and healthcare systems.
  • Strong business acumen, analytical skills and experience working with various internal business partners (especially Sales, Sales Training, Marketing, and Clinical).
  • Knowledge of US health care policy and payment systems, including Medicare and commercial payers, in all sites of service settings (inpatient, outpatient, ASC, and physician office).
  • Experience working with local and regional payers to secure appropriate coverage and payment.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively with minimal supervision.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • An advanced degree such as an MBA, MPH or MHA in health policy, health economics, healthcare administration, health services research, or similar discipline is desired, but not required.
  • Previous people management experience in the health economics and market access field.
  • Experience with health policy development and Federal rule making processes (e.g. CMS)
  • Ability to train sales team members both individually and in group settings in the use of economic tools such as calculators, presentations, and messaging in a compliant manner.
  • Experience and comfort with complex concept sales processes involving changes in customer behavior or care-pathways.
  • Experience working as part of both functional and cross-functional teams.
