About the role:
Boston Scientific is looking for two (2) highly motivated and experienced Principal Designers to join our fast-growing team. In this role, you'll use your technical skills and passion for innovation to lead the commercialization of new products and improvements. You'll work hands-on to solve complex problems in a fast-paced, global environment, focusing on developing processes from concept to production. This position involves cross-functional collaboration to design and commercialize advanced technology, supporting process development across Boston Scientific’s global plant network. This role will be responsible for modeling/designing components for new and existing medical device products (e.g. assemblies/equipment/fixtures/programmers/leads/stents) into detailed drawings and documentation using CAD and other tools.
At Boston Scientific, we value collaboration and synergy. This role follows a fully-onsite work model requiring employees to be in our local office five (5) days per week.

Your responsibilities will include:
- Hold and conduct team meetings on small and large projects to review trade-offs, layout comparisons and other analyses to optimize solutions
- Utilize complex software tools (Solidworks, Capture, and Windchill) to make technical designs that fulfill the mechanical specifications
- Give direction to other individual contributors and be able to communicate effectively to accomplish the task at hand
- Gather data and present to upper management using tools like Excel and Word
- Leverage communication skills to facilitate the design process and reach project completion
- Develop, test, and execute complex mechanical systems and designs that reveal their functions
- Have a full knowledge of GD&T tolerancing
- Work independently on projects, meet timelines, and document proven concepts with data to back it up
- Create product concepts using current tool analysis techniques and technologies through use of parametric CAD software and other mechanisms
- Perform Mechanical design/redesign of medical device products applying industry standards (e.g. ASME Y14.5M-2009) to detail drawings
- Create/modify/maintain documentation using CAD tools that are tied to a data management system
- Provide support for OEM device documentation and Bill of Material structure support
- Complete document packages by detailing parts and creating BOM and schematics following layouts, sketches, and verbal instructions to ensure that all of the needed documentation is available for the manufacturing process
- Review and verify design work of peers to check for compliance with standards and corporate procedures
- May review engineering order (EO) package by reading information on EOs (e.g. document description) and supplemental information (e.g., preliminary sketch) to identify missing information
- May generate engineering change orders (ECOs); may provide illustrations, animation, and web publishing solutions that allow communication of 2D/3D product information for interactive assembly, maintenance/restoration of documentation, product presentations, and Federal and International compliance
- Use strong knowledge of pneumatics and kinetics
- Recommend product improvements and enhancements for improving methods/workflow through the department
- Work collaboratively with engineering, management, and other functional departments, and provide input and assistance
- Create timely, innovative, cost-effective design solutions, and identify opportunities for continuous improvement
Required qualifications:
- Associate’s or 2-year technical degree (or higher) in mechanical drafting or related field
- Minimum of 8 years of professional experience in mechanical design and using SolidWorks software
- Hands-on mechanical aptitude
- Strong understanding of GD&T
- Demonstrated ability to develop equipment/fixtures/tooling from concept to production
- Demonstrated cross functional teamwork in technically demanding environment
- Strong conflict resolution and problem-solving skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to travel, domestic and international, up to 10%
Preferred qualifications:
- Prior experience as a technical lead on team projects
- Molding experience
- Prior experience in medical device industry or similar highly-regulated industry
- Highly motivated individual that can independently drive deliverables to completion through collaboration among team members
- Experience in New Product Development
- Demonstrated ability to develop and drive innovative solutions into processes and products
- Medical device design experience
- Experience with mechanical design
- Ability to schedule out timelines with specific milestones to achieve and demonstrated success
