About the role:

 

Boston Scientific is looking for a highly motivated Process Engineer III - Battery Chemist to join our fast-growing team. In this role, you'll use your technical skills and passion for innovation to drive the commercialization of new products and improvements. You'll work hands-on to solve complex problems in a fast-paced, global environment, focusing on developing processes from concept to production. This position involves cross-functional collaboration to design and commercialize advanced technology, supporting process development across Boston Scientific’s global plant network. 

 

At Boston Scientific, we value collaboration and synergy. This role follows a fully-onsite work model requiring employees to be in our local office five (5) days per week.

Your responsibilities will include:

 

  • Work with a multidisciplinary team in developing innovative battery (cell) designs and processes to power life-sustaining and life-enhancing implantable medical devices
  • Collaborate with the Process Engineering team to transition laboratory-scale designs and production techniques into standardized production processes
  • Develop and execute analytical test methods and analysis of battery chemistries – proficient in documenting and communicating test results to design teams
  • Develop electrolyte formulations for various battery chemistries working with battery chemists
  • Participate in and lead efforts to characterize the electrochemical performance, safety, and stability of developmental cell designs
  • Collaborate with Manufacturing and Quality teams on day-to-day manufacturing issues and product disposition decisions; serve as technical support for CAPA work
  • Lead value improvement projects (VIP) related to battery design and components, to lower costs and improve manufacturability
  • Provide Design for Manufacturability (DFM) input to the engineering print package 
  • Build and test cell prototypes; build coin cells as test articles
  • Produce technical reports, specifications; write validation protocols and reports applicable to new processes 
  • Advise on materials and material compatibility
  • Execute the functional deliverables associated with the PDP/TDP processes, Project Management, and Quality Systems 
  • May serve as core team member or extended team member on new product development projects 
  • Write clean and concise work instructions that can be understood by product builders  
  • Own/contribute to technical reports, validations, and qualifications by capturing experimental results  
  • Complete proper documentation to meet quality systems requirements (e.g., BOM's, Routers, FMEA's, etc.) 
  • Prepare and present technical data and recommendations at technical and business reviews 
  • Oversee development builds associated with the project using special work requests 
  • Train manufacturing personnel, when required, as part of early prototype line development and validation 

 

Required qualifications: 

 

  • Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree in Chemistry
  • Minimum of 4 years of professional batteries experience relevant to this role
  • Battery development and battery chemistry experience – specifically battery electrolytes
  • GC/MS, NMR, and microcalorimetry equipment experience
  • Experience with electrochemical cell testing techniques
  • Experience preparing electrode slurries and electrode coatings
  • Experience evaluating electrode materials in coin cells and single-layer pouch cells
  • Hands-on mechanical aptitude – working in lab and on manufacturing line
  • Demonstrated engineering fundamentals (LEAN, DFM, etc.) and problem-solving skills 
  • Demonstrated cross functional teamwork in a technically demanding environment 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills 
  • Ability to travel, up to 10%

 

Preferred qualifications: 

 

  • Prior experience in medical device industry or similar highly-regulated industry  
  • Demonstrated use of Design for Six Sigma tools (Design of Experiments, problem solving)  
  • Demonstrated understanding and usage of statistics to drive improvements; proficiency in Minitab

Compensation will be commensurate with demonstrable level of experience and training, pertinent education including licensure and certifications, among other relevant business or organizational needs. Compensation for non-exempt (hourly), non-sales roles may also include variable compensation from time to time (e.g., any overtime and shift differential) and annual bonus target (subject to plan eligibility and other requirements).
