About the role:

We are seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to lead the development and integration of battery and power systems for next-generation electrically active implantable medical devices. This role sits within a multidisciplinary R&D team and is responsible for translating system-level needs into robust electrical and battery specifications, while driving root cause analysis and continuous improvement of power-related performance.

This is not a purely design role - it requires strong systems thinking, cross-functional leadership, and the ability to work at the interface of electrical hardware, ASIC design, and battery technology.

Work Mode:

At Boston Scientific, we value collaboration and synergy. This role follows an onsite work model, requiring employees to be present in our Arden Hills, MN office, at least four to five days per week.

Visa Sponsorship:
Boston Scientific will not offer sponsorship or take over sponsorship of an employment visa for this position at this time.

Your responsibilities will include:

Battery & Power System Development

  • Define, develop, and validate battery and power subsystem architectures for implantable devices.
  • Lead battery selection, characterization, and qualification efforts with internal teams and external suppliers.
  • Establish performance requirements including capacity, longevity, power consumption, safety margins, and environmental constraints.

Specification Development

  • Translate clinical, system, and product requirements into detailed electrical and battery specifications.
  • Collaborate with ASIC and electrical design teams to ensure alignment between system constraints and implementation.
  • Drive clear, testable, and traceable requirements documentation.

Root Cause Analysis & Reliability

  • Lead investigations into power-related failures, anomalies, and field issues.
  • Apply structured problem-solving methodologies, including fault tree analysis, DOE, and statistical analysis.
  • Develop corrective and preventive actions to improve system robustness and reliability.

Cross-Functional Collaboration:

  • Interface closely with ASIC design, firmware, systems engineering, and mechanical teams.
  • Act as the technical bridge between battery suppliers and internal design teams.
  • Support integration and verification activities across the product lifecycle.

Regulatory & Quality Support:

  • Ensure designs and specifications meet regulatory standards for implantable medical devices, including ISO 14708 and IEC 60601 where applicable.
  • Contribute to design controls, risk management, and documentation required for regulatory submissions.

Required qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in electrical engineering, with a focus on battery systems, energy storage, or power management.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and releasing specifications for complex systems.
  • Experience, performing and leading root cause analysis in a regulated or high-reliability environment.
  • Strong understanding of power electronics, battery behavior, and lifetime modeling.
  • Experience working cross-functionally with ASIC or integrated circuit design teams.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience with implantable or wearable medical devices.
  • Familiarity with lithium-based chemistries used in medical applications.
  • Experience working with battery vendors and managing external technical partnerships.
  • Knowledge of low-power system design and energy budgeting for long-life devices – paired with high power features.
  • Experience with reliability testing, accelerated life testing, and failure analysis techniques.
  • Systems-level thinking with attention to detail.
  • Ability to translate ambiguous requirements into concrete specifications.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective communication across technical disciplines.
  • Comfort operating in a regulated, design-controlled environment.
