Our Active Implantable Systems (AIS) R&D organization at Boston Scientific is seeking a visionary and deeply technical Senior Fellow AI Architect to lead the transformation of research and development through the adoption and integration of artificial intelligence (AI) across our product development lifecycle. This role will shape how AI-enabled tools, platforms and workflows are used across R&D to improve engineering productivity, accelerate innovation, enhance product quality and strengthen organizational capabilities.
As a senior technical leader in product development, this individual will define the AIS R&D AI architecture strategy, evaluate and guide the deployment of emerging AI technologies, partner with internal engineering teams, and collaborate with external AI vendors to tailor solutions for regulated product development environments. The role requires deep technical expertise, strategic influence, organizational leadership and a passion for transforming how engineers work across multiple R&D disciplines.
This Senior Fellow-level role operates with significant autonomy and enterprise-wide influence, partnering with senior R&D leadership, IT, Quality, Regulatory and external technology partners to define the future of AI-enabled innovation within AIS R&D. The individual will serve as both a strategic architect and hands-on technical leader, driving significant and measurable transformation initially across AIS R&D, with the potential to expand solutions and capabilities to other divisions across Boston Scientific.
Work model, sponsorship, relocation:
This is an on-site role based in Arden Hills, Minnesota, requiring employees to work on-site a minimum of four days per week. Relocation assistance may be available for qualified candidates.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Define and provide technical leadership for the long-term AI architecture and transformation strategy for AIS R&D.
- Build strong partnerships with AI leaders and technical contributors across Boston Scientific to advance shared capabilities and solutions.
- Identify and implement AI-enabled opportunities to improve engineering agility, productivity, product quality and speed to market, including developing and updating supporting processes.
- Evaluate, customize and deploy AI tools, copilots and agentic workflows for engineering and product development environments.
- Establish a scalable and secure AI ecosystem for regulated product development that supports engineering functions across development, testing, simulation, documentation, risk management and knowledge management workflows.
- Drive interoperability between AI platforms and enterprise engineering systems, including design history file (DHF) and device master record (DMR) systems, version control, issue tracking, requirements management, simulation tools and integrated development environments (IDEs).
- Lead technical relationships with external AI vendors and technology partners, including technology evaluations, proofs of concept and build-versus-buy decisions.
- Drive organizational adoption of AI-enabled workflows through training, mentoring and change leadership across AIS R&D teams.
- Communicate AI strategy, roadmaps, business impact and transformation progress to executive leadership and technical stakeholders.
- Monitor emerging AI technologies, industry trends and competitive advancements to inform long-term innovation strategy.
- Serve as a senior technical authority and trusted adviser for AI-enabled engineering and product development across AIS R&D.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in engineering, computer science, data science, artificial intelligence or a related technical discipline.
- Minimum of 15 years' experience in engineering, software, AI/ML, digital transformation or product development environments.
- Minimum of 7 years' experience in senior technical leadership, principal architect, fellow or equivalent enterprise-level technical roles.
- Demonstrated experience developing, deploying or customizing AI-enabled tools for engineering or product development workflows.
- Deep understanding of generative AI, large language models (LLMs) and modern AI platform architectures, including agentic and retrieval-augmented approaches.
- Experience integrating AI technologies into enterprise engineering environments and development ecosystems.
- Proven success partnering with third-party AI technology vendors and evaluating emerging AI platforms.
- Strong understanding of AI governance, responsible AI practices, data security and compliance considerations.
- Experience working within a regulated environment, including an understanding of compliance considerations associated with deploying AI-enabled technologies.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Exceptional communication, influence and executive presentation skills, with the ability to translate complex technical concepts for technical and nontechnical stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to lead through influence and drive organizational adoption of new technologies and ways of working.
- Demonstrated leadership of enterprise-scale AI transformation initiatives across multiple engineering disciplines or functions.
- Background applying AI technologies within medical device product development environments.
