About the role:  
As a Global Research and Development (R&D) executive leader within Global Operations, you will lead the long-term strategic plans and direction for product design, development and sustainment teams.   You will be a vision and mission focused leader who challenges the status quo and leads a large organization that spans multiple global locations.  This role involves close collaboration with multiple functions and divisions across the company.   You will be a member of the Technical Executive Committee (TEC). 

 

This is a hybrid position (in office minimum three days per week) based in one of our BSC locations in China, Costa Rica (Heredia), Minnesota or Marlborough, with preference being in Minnesota or Marlborough.

 

Your responsibilities will include: 

  • Overseeing the R&D operations and Global Design Solution teams across multiple global locations. 
    • This includes Global Stewardship of Capital Equipment Design and Sustaining (EME) as well as coordination and management of legal, HR, tax, and finance activities for multiple legal entities.  Note that this is how the role is scoped as of posting, but as the company grows, some responsibilities may be added or removed. 
  • Contribute to developing the organization's vision at global, regional and local level.  Specifically execute Asian-Pacific (APAC) and other regional product development strategies and business plans in partnership with global and local commercial teams.
  • Anticipate changing demands, evaluate key business challenges, and develop innovative solutions affecting future strategies.   
  • Partner, develop and implement innovation strategies in APAC. 
  • Communicate the mission and vision of the R&D sites, R&D divisions, and Global R&D to the group and to other divisions. Communicate Global R&D progress to multiple stakeholders across all divisions and GRD. 
  • While the primary customers remain the global R&D divisions, there has been an increased focus on local products and innovation, engaging with China, India and other Global commercial teams to develop innovative product solutions.    
  • Foster extensive collaboration with internal BSC teams and external physicians and key opinion leaders, participated in steering committees on sustainability and innovation, and support due diligence efforts for products and companies in the APAC region with commercial and business development teams.
  • Lead multiple new product development teams (NPD), software development and test teams, sustaining engineering, packaging labeling teams, exploratory teams, user interface, and human factors design teams at all sites.     
  • Empower teams and foster a diverse and inclusive workplace, by ensuring a culture of high performance and collaboration.   
  • Establish construct and drive global Capital Equipment design and sustaining efforts. 
  • Ensure site budgets and schedules align with corporate and divisional requirements, allocate resources to meet project goals and technologies, facilitate cross-divisional sharing of initiatives, leverage knowledge to integrate functions for a competitive advantage, and safeguard intellectual property security.  

 

Required Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or applicable technical field. 
  • 12+ years' engineering or technical experience in the Product Life Cycle Process in the Medical Device industry.
  • 5+ years' experience directly managing senior level leaders.   Previous experience managing large global teams through their People Leaders.    
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally as required (up to 25%).

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • MS or other advanced degree.
  • Strong preference for someone who has worked in multiple functions and brings a holistic set of experiences to the role. 
  • Experience leading others in APAC, Costa Rica and the United States is preferred. 
  • Strong record of working globally and cross-functionally across an organizational matrix and history of building strong stakeholder relationships. 
  • Previous experience in product portfolio management; evaluating customer needs, investment decisions & trade-offs, evaluating performance and course-correcting as needed. A forward thinker who connects with an external network and actively tracks and implements applicable trends in research and technologies. 
  • Significant customer experience, collaboration and interface including FIH, support of clinical trials, advisory boards, customer field visits, innovation visits, etc. 
  • Ability to understand and connect authentically with all levels and types of employees. Drive high level of employee engagement leading through our BSC behaviors and build a culture of high performance, learning, continuous improvement, and leading diversity and inclusion. 
  • Proven ability to drive change across org/job design, processes, and human capital capabilities. 
  • Strong financial acumen and P&L experience for a regional large scale or global function/division.   
  • A vision and mission focused leader who courageously challenges the status quo.
