About the role:

The Sr. Optomechanical Engineer will perform research, development and testing of fiber optic devices, laser systems and single-use devices for surgical applications. Provide in-depth knowledge of mechanical design, optomechanics and fiber optics. Work closely with other members of a small, interdisciplinary team developing innovative medical devices and related technologies in a fast-paced and fun environment. This position will require you to translate raw ideas into high-level design concepts and prototypes.

 

Work Mode:

At Boston Scientific, we value collaboration and synergy. This role follows an onsite work model, requiring employees to be present in our Carlsbad, CA office, at least four to five days per week.

 

Your responsibilities will include:

Design and Development:

  • Design, assemble, align, test, and troubleshoot fiber optic and laser delivery devices.
  • Fabricate complex fiberoptic and laser connectors for single use medical devices.
  • Develop front end mechanisms and optics for coupling, interface and control of a surgical laser system.
  • Work with manufacturers to define requirements for components and subsystems and realize prototypes.
  • Derive product design requirements based on top-level requirements and user needs input.
  • Medical device development activities such as prototyping and testing, pilot builds, V&V, risk assessment, and validation of ramp-up to production.
  • Contribute to patent portfolio and strategy development.
  • Identify technical, project schedule, and commercial viability risks.

Analysis:

  • Perform stress analysis, thermal analysis, tolerance stack up, and other engineering calculations to ensure the integrity and performance of mechanical designs.

Prototyping and Testing:

  • Create prototypes and conduct testing to validate design concepts and verify performance requirements.

Manufacturing Support:

  • Collaborate with manufacturing teams to optimize designs for manufacturability and provide technical support during production.

Documentation:

  • Prepare technical documentation, including engineering drawings, specifications, and reports.

Continuous Improvement:

  • Identify opportunities for improvement in existing designs and processes to enhance product performance, reliability, and cost-effectiveness.

Cross-functional Collaboration:

  • Work closely with other engineering disciplines, such as electrical and software engineering, as well as with product management and quality assurance teams, to meet project goals and objectives.

 

Required qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Physics, or similar disciplines with five or more years of relevant experience. A master’s degree or PhD can be substituted for relevant experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in mechanical design and development, preferably in a manufacturing or product development environment.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD) and other engineering analysis tools.
  • Expertise in Mechanical Design, Optomechanics and Fiber Optics.
  • Proficiency with industry standard tools and methods for mechanical and optical systems engineering.
  • Broad knowledge of optical assembly, alignment, and test methodologies and associated equipment.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team. Hands-on experience in laboratory technical work, preferably in lasers, photonics and optics.
  • Experience in documenting technical work and results, writing lab reports, analysis, and presentation of data.

 

Preferred qualifications:

  • Proficiency with SolidWorks.
  • Biomedical product, medical device development experience preferred.
  • Proficiency designing optical and laser systems with SolidWorks and ZEMAX.
  • Development of fiber optic energy delivery devices, fiber optic probes and laser systems.
  • Optomechanical design, GD&T, tolerance analysis, design for athermalization, bonding, and assembly processes.
  • Termination of fiber optics, connectors and ferrules for single and multi-optic assemblies.
  • Fiber optics assembly, bonding and finishing processes.
  • Biomedical product or medical device development experience.
  • Experience with Q-switched, fiber optic or other high-energy lasers and related optical and optomechanical hardware.
  • Experience with Class 3B & Class 4 lasers and related optics for energy delivery and related single-use devices.
  • Understanding of Design Controls according to ISO 13485 or 21 CFR 820.
  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills, and interpersonal skills are required.

Compensation will be commensurate with demonstrable level of experience and training, pertinent education including licensure and certifications, among other relevant business or organizational needs. At BSC, it is not typical for an individual to be hired near the bottom or top of the anticipated salary range listed above.

 

Compensation for non-exempt (hourly), non-sales roles may also include variable compensation from time to time (e.g., any overtime and shift differential) and annual bonus target (subject to plan eligibility and other requirements).

 

Compensation for exempt, non-sales roles may also include variable compensation, i.e., annual bonus target and long-term incentives (subject to plan eligibility and other requirements).
