We are seeking a Principal R&D Engineer on a permanent basis to join our team.
Job Purpose:
The Boston Scientific Active Implantable Systems (AIS) Hardware Sustaining team is seeking a technical leader to drive sustaining engineering efforts for implantable medical devices. In this role, you will leverage deep expertise in electrical engineering to own complex design changes, resolve systemic issues, and ensure long-term product reliability and compliance. You will influence strategy for component lifecycle management, lead cross-functional initiatives, and mentor engineers while maintaining a strong commitment to patient safety and product quality.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead and resolve electrical design issues in released products, including root cause analysis and corrective actions.
· Define and implement design changes to improve reliability, manufacturability, and cost-effectiveness while ensuring regulatory compliance.
· Plan and execute Design Analysis Testing (DAT) and Design Verification Testing (DVT) for electrical changes, ensuring compliance with external standards and regulatory requirements.
· Support failure analysis and provide technical guidance for returned product evaluations and manufacturing issues.
· Maintain and update documentation, including design history files, change notices, and test reports.
· Collaborate with quality, manufacturing, regulatory, and supply chain teams to assess/support design changes and to ensure smooth implementation of changes.
· Provide technical support for component obsolescence, supplier changes, and process improvements.
· Communicate effectively with stakeholders and leadership on technical updates and risk assessments.
· Mentor junior engineers and technicians, fostering technical growth and knowledge sharing.
Education & Experience:
· BS in Electrical Engineering (MS or PhD preferred)
· Experience: 10+ years in electrical design or sustaining engineering, with at least 3 years in a technical leadership role.
· Proven expertise in low-power/high-voltage circuit design, troubleshooting, and reliability engineering.
· Solid lab experience with debugging, fixture development/debug, and test equipment use.
· Ability to solve complex problems with root cause analysis, including designing and executing experimental plans and using statistical methodologies to drive data-based decisions.
· Ability to draw conclusions and make recommendations based on technical inputs from multiple and varied sources.
· Excellent organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
· Ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver results under tight timelines.
Preferred Qualifications
· Experience with implantable medical device electronics and systems.
· Familiarity with Bluetooth communication protocols and transceiver Integration.
· Experience with LabVIEW, Matlab, Minitab, LTSpice, and Python for automation and data analysis.
· Knowledge of firmware debugging and system-level integration.
· Strong understanding of regulatory requirements for medical devices.
· Understanding of external EMI, RF Conformance and MRI standards.
· Expertise in circuit design analysis techniques, and simulation tools such as LTSpice.
