Purpose

 

 

The primary role of the Coatings Scientist in the Product Performance lab at Boston Scientific Clonmel is to support new product teams in identifying and characterizing materials and/or technologies to aid in the development and commercialization of next-generation products. The team is also responsible for executing failure analysis testing on-site. The Coatings Scientist will conduct process engineering research, development, and evaluation to support cutting-edge coating technologies. This role involves reviewing and enhancing processing techniques and methods applied in the manufacture and fabrication of products. Additionally, the Coatings Scientist will contribute to next-generation product development and release activities, supporting the coatings technology roadmap. The role also includes providing leadership, clear direction, and guidance to process technicians to support execution activities. 

 

 

 

Key Responsibilities: 

 

  

  • Develop and implement R&D plans based on atomic layer processing methodologies, conducting independent research on chemistry and processes. 

  • Collaborate with Engineering and Application teams to advance the development of novel materials and processes. 

  • Provide guidance and mentorship to colleagues and junior specialists, fostering a culture of continuous learning and innovation. 

  • Devise innovative concepts and solutions for process development of new material systems and applications, addressing the most impactful customer needs. 

  • Integrate state-of-the-art R&D activities into equipment product and applications development, ensuring successful transfer of project results with comprehensive documentation. 

  • Develop analytical and manufacturing methodologies for quality control. 

  • Lead external R&D engagements with academic partners, driving collaborative research initiatives. 

  • Design and analyze DOEs, reporting key results through detailed reports, process development documents, and presentations during meetings. 

  • Promote and support innovation, facilitating IP generation as appropriate.  

  

 

Requirements: 

 

  • Hons BSc degree in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry or Physics or related field. (MSc highly advantagous) 

  • 3+ years of experience; or a  

  • PhD with 1 year  professional experience; or  

  • PhD with relevant  experience (Post – doc in the area of coatings technology) 

  • Familiarity with working in a laboratory and lab  equipment with experience in surface preparation and analytical techniques. 

  • In-depth understanding of Statistical Process Control (SPC) and/or Design of Experiments (DOE). 

  • Background in coating technologies such as:  Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD), Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD), Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition (PECVD), Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) or others. 

  • Knowledge of  Plasma Physics, Reactive Ion Etching (RIE), Atomic Layer Etching (ALE), Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP), Capacitively Coupled Plasma (CCP) 

  • Knowledge of Material synthesis and material characterization. 

  • The successful candidate must be a self-starter with the ability to work on own initiative, while possessing strong team player characteristics.
