About the role:

Responsible for the development of new technology, packaging, products, materials, and processes by utilizing knowledge of materials science, engineering, chemistry, and physics. Ensures products meet design, quality, and operational standards while analyzing data to define technical specifications. Lead a project team, determining goals and objectives for the projects. Mentors employees by sharing technical expertise and providing feedback and guidance. Manages workload and coordinates deliverables across stakeholders, including R&D, Quality, Regulatory, Manufacturing, and Purchasing, ensuring high-quality standards across multiple manufacturing sites. Ensures compliance with packaging policies, quality systems, and regulatory requirements. Collaborates with management to evaluate team performance and enhance technical expertise in packaging.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Complete complex engineering tasks in technology development, packaging/product design, material testing, process studies, research investigations, and report preparation.
  • Apply engineering principles to become a recognized leader in a specialized field and take on leadership roles within the company.
  • Lead teams, review performance, set objectives, and foster a positive, team-oriented environment. Mentor engineers and guide project teams toward goal achievement.
  • Coordinate and manage project goals, design tests and experiments, analyze results, and provide recommendations.
  • Generate and manage packaging documentation, including specifications, test plans, and reports.
  • Oversee packaging testing for new product development and design improvements.
  • Collaborate with internal departments and suppliers to improve packaging processes.
  • Monitor workload and ensure timely coordination of deliverables across stakeholders (R&D, Quality, Regulatory, Manufacturing, Purchasing).
  • Manage on-time, high-quality completion of deliverables across manufacturing sites.
  • Resolve emerging design and operations issues promptly.
  • Develop and implement department strategies for continuous improvement and process optimization.
  • Ensure compliance with packaging policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Support product development teams in creating Directions for Use Manuals and manage translation processes.
  • Oversee approval activities for labeling and packaging components.
  • Manage the creation and modification of packaging components based on existing designs.
  • Communicate with external vendors regarding packaging artwork and proofing.

In all actions, demonstrates a primary commitment to patient safety and product quality by maintaining compliance to the Quality Policy and all other documented quality processes and procedures.

For those individuals that supervise others, the following statements are applicable:Assures that appropriate resources (personnel, tools, etc.) are maintained in order to assure Quality System compliance and adherence to the BSC Quality Policy.

What we're looking for in you

  • Licentiate, Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Industrial, Chemical, or Packaging Engineering
  • Minimum of 5+ years experience in design, development and validation of packaging in a FDA regulated industry (medical devices preferred); or equivalent combination of education and/or experience is required.
  • Experience in leading teams, review performance, set objectives, and foster a positive, team-oriented environment. Mentor engineers and guide project teams toward goal achievement.
  • Experience in bringing creative package designs from concept through commercialization.
  • Knowledge related to paperboard, corrugated, flexible packaging films, Tyvek, thermoformed trays, injection molded parts, and packaging equipment. Familiarity with ASTM and ISTA package testing requirements. Familiarity with the medical device industry, FDA regulations, ISO 11607, quality systems, and sterilization preferred.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. 
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects and effectively manage timelines.
  • Proficient use in current versions of MS Excel, MS Project, MS Word, and familiarity with product data management software preferred.
  • Position requires 15-25% travel both domestic and international.
  • Desirable English level: 90% or above
