Director of Program Management


About the role:

  • General manager of a family of product and/or technology development project/programs.  Responsible for leading the commercialization or continuation of new products/services in Boston Scientific’s Technology Development Process (TDP), Product Development Process (PDP) or Sustaining Engineering (SE).  Responsibilities include development and execution of a program plan to deliver the defined solution business case, identification and resolution of staffing and resource requirements and issues, and developing and managing the project deliverables and/or managerial oversight of a team of project managers tasked to do the same.


Your responsibilities include:

  • Project/Program Management:  Develops and implements business plan, including cost, schedule, risk and performance for new product introduction or continuation; Leads the team in completion of product development plans including the continuous cascade to identified markets to ensure appropriate product availability in alignment with the commercialization plan or throughout the full lifecycle of the product ; Builds team ownership and commitment to project and business plans; Provides structured thinking to project team on overall approach and delegates as appropriate; Drives a high performance culture by fostering innovation; Directs and trains key project management processes; a focus on the Four Voices, personal accountability, and a commitment to results; Leads the team in appropriate decision making through strong judgment and the ability to analyze options and implications.
  • Communications and Reviews:  Responsible for department-level communications; Liaison between the business unit and the PIB; Participates in phase and business reviews; reviews IBPs; defines and tracks key business unit metrics; Responsible for elevating critical business decisions on existing products to the appropriate management boards.
  • Relationship/People Management:  Directs multiple project/program managers who are leading cross-functional development teams; Provides input to functional directors on team and team member performance; Develops and maintains strong relationships with functional heads and BPT/PIB to drive success of Core Team members and overall Core Team contributions; Actively influences cross-functional collaboration; Will provide direct supervision to other Program Managers; Sponsors professional development of project/program managers.
  • Product/Technology Management:  Defines and influences the technical approach to technology application and new product development; Identifies, communicates, and manages business unit technical risk.
  • Process Management:  Demonstrates PDP/TDP system knowledge through delivery of high quality and high impact deliverables; Knowledge of quality system use for the creation and continued compliance of products; Actively leads and reviews policy and practice improvements to drive functional excellence; Influences cross-functional and cross-divisional systems effectiveness.
  • Franchise Leadership:  Works as a member of a cross-functional Franchise Leadership Team on one of the Divisions three Franchises; Arterial, Venous or Interventional Oncology.  Plays an active role in overall oversight of the franchise portolio to include investment proposals all the way through to end-of-life decisions.

  • Work is performed without appreciable direction.  Determines organizational objectives, and interprets company policies.  Completed work is reviewed, from a relatively long-term perspective, for desired results.Establishes organizational policies in a major segment of the company.  Interprets, executes, and recommends site(s) function, plant, division, and / or region wide policies.Develops and articulates a strategic vision for areas of responsibility. Leads assigned departments by developing, communicating, and building consensus for goals and programs that support division, business unit and company objectives.

Supervisory Relationships

  • Generally accomplishes results through lower management levels.  Determines and establishes organizational structures and supervisory relationships, subject to top management approval.  Often responsible for managing a major segment of the site(s) function, plant, division, and / or region.

Operations Involvement/Direct Work Involvement

  • Responsible for the successful operation of activities of major significance to the organization.  Rarely becomes involved in daily operational activities.  Is more concerned to see that overall budgets, schedules, and performance standards are realistically set and attained.Monitors progress of departments or units toward divisional and company goals; monitors all costs associated with assigned organizational unit; monitors company-wide indicators such as market share and profitability; monitors industry trends and external environment in areas relevant to the assigned organizational unit.Develops and/or identifies new work processes that will have broad applicability throughout the company; contributes ideas for improving work processes and achieving organizational goals; investigates and solves problems that impact work processes and personnel in multiple units or departments.


  • Decisions would affect the financial, employee, or public relations posture of the company.  Erroneous decisions or recommendations would result in failure to achieve major goals and objectives of the site(s) function, plant, division, and / or region.


  • Represents the organizational unit as the prime internal and external contact on contracts or operations.  Conducts briefings and technical meetings for top management and customer representatives.  Interacts with equivalent level managers concerning matters of significance to the site(s) function, plant, division, and / or region.


What we’re looking for:

  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in Engineering or Project Management.
  • 10+ years of product development experience required
  • Broad experience in project management, direct leadership experience in roles supporting the product development process (inc. commercial exposure) business strategy development and any direct experience in running a project management office is strongly desired
  • Show a track record of motivating teams and functions to achieve above plan performance
  • Show that your communication style can be an effective liaison between the business unit and the PIB
  • Show that you can provide direct supervision to other Program Managers; Sponsors professional development of project/program managers
  • Any experience in portfolio planning and project valuation is very helpful
  • Show a track record, were you can "look-around-corners" to avoid risks and manage scope
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of the design controls, and become a knowledge expert in guiding the teams through the PLCP process
