About the role:

Technical leader for polymer analysis and characterization within the Boston Scientific Preclinical Sciences Materials and Chemistry Laboratory Department. Responsibilities for defining, guiding, interpreting, and communicating materials analysis strategy for BSC customers across the product lifecycle and across global sites. Connects the lab function and lab customers on service provision and technical matters.

 

Work Mode:
At Boston Scientific, we value collaboration and synergy. This role follows an onsite work model, requiring employees to be present in our Maple Grove, MN office at least four to five days per week.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Investigates materials-related needs of product development teams for their advanced engineering problems.
  • Defines and/or assists with material characterization efforts toward root cause determination of complex issues, as well as facilitate development and implementation of numerical analysis solutions.
  • Facilitates communication of advanced materials results to Boston Scientific teams in an appropriate fashion to enhance their understanding of materials processing, device function, and interaction with its environment.
  • Identifies global thought leaders in polymer analysis. Studies & understands relevant published articles & works, to either apply them directly to our materials-related advanced engineering problems or to develop working relationships with parties for accomplishment of such. Leads education efforts and mentoring in polymer analysis, processing, problem-solving, and replacements.
  • For polymer analysis and polymer processing, performs technical consultative function and internal company perspective to R&D, manufacturing, and quality teams.
  • Identifies and initiates programs which result in innovative application of existing or new products or technologies. Plans and executes laboratory research to prove feasibility of concepts.
  • Provides periodic communication updates to management on future business direction and problem resolution.
  • Leads polymer analytical test equipment and software sustaining and replacement projects.
  • Maintains and enhances cross-functional team relationships within the department and with lab customer groups and service partners. Mentors other employees when appropriate.
  • Works cross-functionally in identifying and resolving technical issues.
  • Reviews records and deliverables from the materials and analytical chemistry team for technical competency and compliance with industry best practices for materials testing and analysis.

 

Required qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry, Materials Science Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Polymer Science or Engineering, or related discipline. Work experience emphasis in polymer processing, problem-solving, and analysis.
  • 10+ years of work experience and subject matter expertise in industry as an individual contributor performing polymer analysis, especially with rheological and mechanical tools. The tasks involve non-standard investigational analysis as well as protocol and test method driven experimentation.
  • Work experience in failure analysis, material replacements, supply chain and in providing on-going coaching and performance feedback to direct reports.

 

Preferred qualifications:

  • 15+ years of work experience in industry as an individual contributor in polymer processing, failure analysis, and characterization.
  • Advanced degree in Chemistry, Materials Science Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Polymer Science or Engineering, or related discipline.
  • 3+ years of work experience in industry as a project leader or functional team leader in a materials science and chemistry analytical laboratory.
  • 3+ of the years of work experience in a medical device company.
  • Work experience in industry performing hands-on sample preparation and mechanical, rheology, and thermal instrument/software execution such as melt viscosity, dynamic mechanical analysis, gel permeation chromatography, DSC, TGA, and tensile testing.
  • Work experience performing scientific peer reviews and technical lead reviews of test records and reports for technical competency and quality compliance.
  • Knowledge of and working experience with polymers-related lab test equipment hardware and software.

The anticipated compensation listed above and the value of core and optional employee benefits offered by Boston Scientific (BSC) – see www.bscbenefitsconnect.com--will vary based on actual location of the position and other pertinent factors considered in determining actual compensation for the role. Compensation will be commensurate with demonstrable level of experience and training, pertinent education including licensure and certifications, among other relevant business or organizational needs. At BSC, it is not typical for an individual to be hired near the bottom or top of the anticipated salary range listed above.

 

Compensation for non-exempt (hourly), non-sales roles may also include variable compensation from time to time (e.g., any overtime and shift differential) and annual bonus target (subject to plan eligibility and other requirements).
