Principal R&D Engineer– Maple Grove, MN


About the role: 
We have an exciting opportunity for a Principal R&D Engineer that independently conducts development work as part of a major research and/or development project for TAVR Structural Heart core products within the Interventional Cardiology division.  Products supported include: Cerebral embolic protection system (primary focus of this role), transfemoral insertion sheaths, guidewires, and balloons. This role requires minimal technical direction/review on broad scope or complex projects. Viewed as an expert in one or more in-house technologies.


Your responsibilities include: 

  • Drives complex or novel assignment requiring the development of new or improved techniques and procedures. Work is expected to result in the development of new or refined technologies, products, materials, processes, equipment, and/or scientific method to broaden BSC’s Intellectual Property in key strategic areas.
  • Successfully completes engineering work in one or more of the following: technology development, product design and development, test of materials, preparation of specifications, process study, research investigation (animal and clinical studies), and report preparation.
  • Provides guidance to product and technology teams.
  • Assesses the feasibility and soundness of alternative engineering processes, products, or equipment.
  • Coordinates, manages, and documents project goals and progress and recommends appropriate revisions.
  • Interfaces with Physicians/Cath Lab personnel to identify needs and to obtain feedback on concepts and performance of new devices and to translate customer needs into product concepts.
  • Develops and coaches others on engineering documentation.
  • Trains and/or provides work direction to technicians and less experienced engineers.
  • Leads engineering teams to the successful completion of project goals.
  • Demonstrates PDP/TPD system knowledge through coaching and delivery of high quality, high impact deliverables.


What we’re looking for:

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS in Mechanical or Biomedical Engineering
  • Required minimum years of work experience: 8 years with BS, or 5 years with MS
  • Strong mechanical engineering skills, specifically with catheters, machined and injection molded components, design for manufacturability and planning.
  • Solid lab experience to develop and debug fixtures, and test equipment.
  • Expertise in design simulation tools and analysis techniques.
  • Ability to provide technical leadership as it relates to product and process design.
  • Ability to draw conclusions and make recommendations based on technical inputs from multiple and varied sources.
  • Excellent organizational, communication and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to travel on brief visits to BSC production site in Costa Rica


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with catheter development, extrusion, and guidewire development.
  • Experience with rapid prototyping to excelerate proof of concepts.
  • Experience with tolerance stackup analysis.
  • 6 Sigma green or black belt certifications.
