Principal R&D Engineer; Motor Development

 

About the role: 
We have an exciting opportunity for a Principal R&D Engineer supporting Coronary Therapies projects within the Interventional Cardiology division.  This role will utilize a variety of new and proven technologies to deliver life-changing medical devices to patients and clinicians in support of BSC’s mission.

 

Your responsibilities: 

  • Lead the core competency of slotless BLDC motors within BSCI
  • Focal point for partnering with external motor supplier in the development of motor technology in support of the heart failure franchise
  • Focus of activities will be on mechanical aspects of motor design. As such, this position will be responsibility for integration of the motor into the catheter-based therapies
  • Development activities initially focused on characterizing/improving thermal transfer, torque, and durability characteristics of the motor
  • Work with internal BSC SME’s as well as vendor(s) to define/characterize metallic weld specifications and characterization to create hermetic seals, both within the motor housing as created by the supplier, as well as BSC welding processes required as part of motor integration into catheter based device
  • Work with Team members to characterized hemodynamics requirements of motor and motor interfaces with catheter 
  • Work with vendors to define motor and integration bearing requirements
  • Help define motor torque transfer mechanics from motor to device impeller 
  • Test using electrical equipment such as power supplies, multimeters, and oscilloscopes and mechanical test equipment such as force or torque gauges
  • Work directly with design team members to integrate specific catheter device feedback loop technology and console integration via hardware  
  • Develop specific test methods, participate in animal studies, cadaveric studies, and physician feedback sessions  
  • Work cooperatively with the rest of the project team to develop design inputs, outputs, use conditions, procedure flow, and expected competitive performance limits
  • Provide clear communication to stakeholders at key technical updates
  • Lead the design & execution of structured experimental plans to drive data-based decisions.
  • Work cooperatively with process development, quality, manufacturing, regulatory, clinical, and marketing on complex projects to ensure project success.
  • In all actions, demonstrate a primary commitment to patient safety and product quality by maintaining compliance to all documented quality processes and procedures

 

What we’re looking for:
Minimum Qualifications

  • BS in Mechanical, Biomedical, Electrical or Systems Engineering
  • Bachelor’s Degree with 8 years or more experience OR Master’s Degree with 5 years or more experience OR PhD with 3 years’ experience
  • Solid medical device design control process and documentation experience
  • Solid lab experience with experimental design and test development and execution
  • Ability to draw conclusions and make recommendations based on technical inputs from multiple and varied sources
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and collaboration skills
  • Solid knowledge of cardiovascular anatomy and physiology

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior design/development experience working with small profile implantable slotless BLDC motors
  • Working knowledge of electromechanical systems, medical grade bearings, magnets, and coatings a plus.
  • Motor controls knowledge and programming helpful, though not required.
  • Other potentially desirable experiences include:
  • Working knowledge of hemodynamics of medical devices 
  • Laser welding of metallic components
  • Metallurgy characterization techniques
  • Knowledge of BLDC motor control theory
  • Software programming experience such as Matlab/Simulink/Comsol & C/C++ Programming helpful, but not required.
  • Familiarity with electrical equipment such as power supplies, multimeters, and oscilloscopes.
  • Experience with Solidworks or similar design software (min 500hrs)
  • Experience with medical devices for multiple days duration
  • Ability to iterate designs quickly when requirements haven’t been fully established  
  • Experience with design for manufacturability of catheter components at product volumes    
  • DOE experience
  • Solid knowledge of statistics
