Principal R&D Engineer – Maple Grove, MN

 

About the Role

We have an exciting opportunity on WATCHMAN within the BSC’s Cardiology division. WATCHMAN continues to be an exciting growth driver for BSC.  The ideal candidate will demonstrate a blend of technical knowledge, core team leadership, collaborative stakeholder management, clear decision making and project management expertise. This role will serve as the Core Team Member/Technical Lead to develop next-generation products so BSC can deliver life-changing medical devices to patients and clinicians in support of BSC’s mission. 

 

Your responsibilities include:

 

  • Serving as the R&D core team member/technical lead for the development of our next generation product.
  • Providing technical leadership related to product design.  
  • Creating a strong team culture around high expectations & high performance.
  • Leading the design & execution of structured experimental plans to drive data-based decisions.
  • Facilitating crisp decision making around key technical issues for the overall system and across multiple technical workstreams.
  • Providing clear communication to stakeholders at key technical updates.
  • Leveraging internal/external partners as necessary to achieve project objectives.
  • Understanding clinical use cases and user interface requirements to drive design decisions.
  • Working cooperatively with process development, quality, manufacturing, regulatory, clinical, and marketing on complex projects to ensure project success.
  • Provide multiple options and considerations based on feedback from clinical, manufacturing and business teams 
  • Training and/or provide work direction to technicians and other engineers.
  • Documenting development by writing documents, reports, memos, change requests.
  • Solving engineering problems by analyzing the situation and recommending solutions or alternative actions.
  • Analyzing, evaluating, and verifying requirements, component performance, and systems by using engineering practices.
  • In all actions, demonstrating a primary commitment to patient safety and product quality by maintaining compliance to all documented quality processes and procedures.

 

Required Qualifications:

 

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or related field.
  • 8 years of engineering experience with a Bachelor’s degree OR 5 years with Master’s Degree.
  • Ability to provide technical leadership as it relates to product design and leadership.
  • Strong mechanical engineering and problem-solving skills
  • Medical device experience
  • Experience in all stages of the PDP lifecycle
  • Ability to draw conclusions and make recommendations based on technical inputs from multiple and varied sources.
  • Candidates should be self-starters and have a hands-on approach 
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and collaboration skills.
  • Experience interacting with physicians and customers on product design

 

Preferred Qualifications

 

  • Experience with Nitinol
  • Implant and/or Catheter design and process experience.
  • Ability to build strong relationships across the organization and with external stakeholders.
  • Experience in driving technical trade-off decisions to optimize design, performance, usability, manufacturability, cost-efficiency and reliability.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, judgment, decision-making, and critical thinking skills.
