Principal R&D Engineer – Structural Heart Imaging

 

About the role:

 

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced engineer to lead/build a new team being formed to support the fast-growing Structural Heart business within Boston Scientific.  As we continue to expand our footprint in Structural Heart we are building new R&D capability around medical imaging technologies including CT, Echo, Fluoro, Fusion, VR and AI.  This is a technical/team leadership opportunity in a high growth area of the business. 

 

This technical role will contribute to imaging strategy and provide technical leadership to key initiatives associated to optimizing clinical procedures within the Structural Heart business.  The role will include building/managing technology partnerships, developing investment proposals for new imaging initiatives, leading diligence around evaluation of new imaging technologies, and creating formal position statements around applicability of new technologies. 

 

As the first and most critical technical role to be filled, this is also a great opportunity to be part of recruiting and building a top performing team.  The Structural Heart business is a major growth driver in Boston Scientific with high visibility at all levels of the company.  Medical imaging is becoming more and more critical to SH as catheter based interventional procedures become more complex. This role will provide the right candidate with a technical leadership opportunity & excellent growth potential.

 

Your responsibilities include:

  • Recruit & mentor high potential technical talent
  • Create a strong team culture around high expectations & high performance
  • Facilitate crisp decision making around key technical issues
  • Partner closely with Marketing to develop and execute Imaging portfolio
  • Provide the technical inputs to Structural Heart imaging strategy
  • Develop proposals and align key stakeholders around imaging investments
  • Attend industry conferences & meetings and participate in advisory board meetings to help guide technical perspective on imaging strategy & priorities.
  • Lead technology integration & knowledge transfer within domain of responsibility
  • Provide clear communication to stakeholders at key technical updates
  • Leverage internal/external partners as necessary to achieve project objectives
  • Lead the process of selecting external technical partners as required to achieve strategic objectives.
  • Assess the feasibility and soundness of emerging medical imaging technologies
  • Understand anatomy, clinical use cases and user interface requirements to drive design decisions.
  • Develop novel concepts that expand BSC’s Intellectual Property portfolio in key strategic areas.
  • Anticipate & develop mitigation strategies for project technical risks
  • Interface with Physicians/Cath Lab personnel to identify unmet needs and obtain feedback on new concepts or performance of new devices.

 

What we’re looking for:

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS in Biomedical, Electrical, Computer or Systems Engineering, Physics
  • Required minimum years of work experience (primarily in medical device or related field): 9 years with BS, or 7 years with MS, or 4 years with PhD
  • Strong background in multiple medical imaging modalities (CT, Echo, Fluoro, MRI)
  • Demonstrated capability to lead high performing technical teams.
  • Personal drive, individual accountability & a strong bias for action
  • Strong personal credibility & excellent communication skills

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • MS or Phd in Biomedical, Electrical, Computer or Systems Engineering, Physics.
  • Knowledgable in new medical imaging technologies (Fusion, 4D Echo,)
  • Knowledgable in new applications of imaging data to enhance procedural planning & execution (Simulation, VR, Automation, AI)
  • Strong capability in imaging data and statistical analysis, mathematical modeling
  • Medical Device product development experience
  • Ability to interface effectively with strategic partners & customers
