About the role:
Join a dynamic R&D Materials Science Analytical Services team at Boston Scientific, where you will apply innovative thinking, engineering first principles, and advanced problem-solving techniques. In this role, you will design and execute materials testing projects and provide data analysis in support of new product development, as well as commercial products, processes, and materials. The primary focus is on thermal, rheological, and mechanical testing of polymers to understand material property relationships that inform medical device design and performance. You will also lead small-scale projects that evaluate material changes and their implications on performance and compliance.

At Boston Scientific, we value collaboration and synergy. This role follows an onsite work model requiring employees to be in our Maple Grove location five days a week. Boston Scientific will not offer sponsorship or take over sponsorship of an employment visa for this position at this time.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Collaborating with internal lab stakeholders to plan and execute analytical test campaigns for material characterization or issue resolution
- Conducting analytical testing on polymers using instruments and techniques such as differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), rotational rheometry, tensile testing, and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA)
- Determining appropriate testing parameters, generating experimental documentation, and ensuring test accuracy
- Analyzing, compiling, and interpreting data in summary reports in collaboration with lab subject matter experts to deliver actionable material insights
- Leading small-scale projects to assess material changes, including replacements, vendor transitions, and process modifications
- Communicating with internal customers to define project scope and timelines, coordinating lab activities, and reporting outcomes
- Maintaining laboratory equipment, accessories, and supplies; performing equipment qualifications; writing standard operating procedures (SOPs); and conducting regular maintenance
- Complying with company and departmental SOPs in all testing, documentation, and reporting activities
- Advising and directing scientific technicians on work assignments and training
- Completing basic engineering tasks such as developing and validating test methods, maintaining laboratory documentation, validating equipment, and peer-reviewing technical work
Qualifications:
Required qualifications:
- Minimum of B.S. engineering degree in materials science, biomedical engineering, polymer science, or related field
- Hands-on experience with polymer testing techniques (academic or industry), including university lab experience, engineering internships or co-ops, or industry lab work operating relevant instruments
Preferred qualifications:
- Undergraduate internship or minimum of one year of work experience in a medical device or regulated industry setting
- Experience using TA Instruments equipment, particularly DSC, TGA, rotational rheometry, or DMA systems
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Effective communication and organizational abilities
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and work independently or collaboratively in a team environment
- Experience leading small technical projects or initiatives
