About the role:

We have an exciting opportunity at Boston Scientific’s Maple Grove, MN campus for an R&D Engineer III supporting the WATCHMAN product line, which is a major product line with high visibility and an exciting growth driver for BSC. The role will include researching available literature and performing novel research, developing technologies, and collaborating with cross-functional partners in improving commercial devices & technology to deliver life-changing medical devices to left atrial appendage closure patients and clinicians. This will be a hybrid role (typically 3-4 days per week in office) which will provide the right candidate with excellent growth potential.

At Boston Scientific, we value collaboration and synergy. This role follows a hybrid work model, requiring employees to be in our Maple Grove, MN office at least three days per week.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • This position will be focused on mechanical product design (not software, electrical, or imaging).
  • Integrate into a strong, high performance team culture.
  • Facilitate crisp decision making around key technical issues.
  • Provide clear communication to stakeholders at technical updates.
  • Lead the design & execution of structured experimental plans to drive data-based decisions.
  • Understand anatomy, clinical use cases and user interface requirements to drive design decisions.
  • Develop novel improvements to products or processes resulting in expansion of BSC’s Intellectual Property portfolio.
  • Successfully complete engineering work in multiple of the following areas: technology development, product design and development, test method development, specification development, bench studies.
  • Research, develop, design, and evaluate alternative engineering processes, materials, designs, and/or equipment.
  • Translate customer needs into product requirements and design specifications.
  • Work cooperatively with process development, quality, manufacturing, regulatory, clinical, marketing, supplier engineering, and other supporting functions on complex projects.
  • Direct support personnel and coordinate project activities.
  • Maintain detailed documentation throughout all phases of research and development.

 

Required qualifications

  • BS in Biomedical or Mechanical Engineering, or Materials Science.
  • 3+ years full time work experience supporting Class II or Class III medical devices.
  • Familiarity with design analysis techniques.
  • Solid statistical analysis knowledge.
  • Experienced with mechanical product design or process support, with strong hands-on engineering skills.
  • Ability to draw conclusions and make recommendations based on technical inputs from multiple and varied sources.
  • Ability to provide technical leadership related to product and process design.

 

Preferred qualifications:

  • MS in Biomedical or Mechanical Engineering, or Materials Science.
  • 2+ years Class II or Class III Medical Device product design/development experience.
  • Experience in researching literature and conveying clinical understanding with technical credibility.
  • Catheter design and/or Nitinol experience.
  • Experience developing and validating test methods.
  • Experience with customer complaints analysis.
  • Experience with direct support of regulatory submissions.
  • Experience with BSC quality systems.
  • Strong understanding of cardiac anatomy.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and collaboration skills.

The anticipated compensation listed above and the value of core and optional employee benefits offered by Boston Scientific (BSC) – see www.bscbenefitsconnect.com--will vary based on actual location of the position and other pertinent factors considered in determining actual compensation for the role. Compensation will be commensurate with demonstrable level of experience and training, pertinent education including licensure and certifications, among other relevant business or organizational needs. At BSC, it is not typical for an individual to be hired near the bottom or top of the anticipated salary range listed above.

 

Compensation for non-exempt (hourly), non-sales roles may also include variable compensation from time to time (e.g., any overtime and shift differential) and annual bonus target (subject to plan eligibility and other requirements).
