R&D Fellow (Technical Lead role) – Maple Grove MN      


About the role:

Boston Scientific is seeking a highly motivated and experienced R&D leader to serve as a Technical Lead in the Interventional Cardiology division.  The candidate will provide overall technical direction and team leadership regarding design and development of Mechanical Circulatory support systems (MCS) which is a transformational growth area for the IC division with high visibility across BSC, building a new franchise. This opportunity will provide the successful candidate with significant growth potential including considerable interaction with physicians, customers and key opinion leaders.


This candidate will provide guidance to an interdisciplinary team of Mechanical, Computational, Electrical, Preclinical and other functional group members from project conception to commercialization. The program includes multiple embodiments of MCS to meet different clinical and patient needs, ranging from Cardiogenic Shock and High Risk PCI to Advanced Heart Failure, and involves complex systems and technologies


In Interventional Cardiology (IC) we design, develop, and produce technologies for diagnosing and treating coronary artery disease and other cardiovascular disorders. We have a robust product pipeline, and we will continue to make an investment in Interventional treatments.


Responsibilities will include:

  • Being the technical team leader:  Expectations include creating, aligning, and leading the technical development strategy and project scope to ensure the team hits all major project milestones and meets the clinical and market objectives. Effort will include leading technical team meetings, reviewing experimental/project plans, risk management and making design related decisions using a systems engineering approach.
  • Communication:  Manage internal and external stakeholder communication on critical technical updates and risk elevation.  Secure functional management and business leadership agreement on the decisions made and the technical strategy.  Engage directly with business leaders on project status, issues and technical gaps/ risks.
  • Driving the product design:  Understanding anatomy, disease states, clinical use cases and user interface requirements and using these to drive the definition of product requirements. This includes interfacing closely with Physicians, Customers and Cath Lab personnel to enable translation of customer needs to device concepts.  Assess the performance of developed devices through execution of structured experimental plans to drive data based decisions. Oversee and guide test plans including evaluation, verification & validation activities, and risk analyses. Guide definition of product requirements and product specifications to meet the clinical and market objectives.
  • Manage the technical team and resources:  Mentor, guide, and develop the technical team.  Work with internal or external partners as necessary to leverage key capabilities as needed. Mentor engineers in engineering activities, methodologies, and domain knowledge.
  • Collaborate with internal and extended team members:  Form strong partnerships with key team members and stakeholders of the business functions including quality, design assurance, manufacturing, regulatory, marketing, and clinical sciences.



What we’re looking for:

Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD/MS/ BS in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related field with 9/12/14+ years of engineering experience respectively developing complex products
  • Strong mechanical and system engineering skills over a broad range of products/applications.  Proven project leader with experience leading teams on high-visibility/high-priority new technology ventures. Experience in leading device product development from concept through commercialization - strong knowledge of Design Controls & Risk Management practices.
  • Self-motivated with a passion for solving problems and breaking down complex problems. Personal drive, individual accountability & a strong bias for action
  • Strong personal credibility & excellent organizational, communication and collaboration skills.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Medical Device industry experience in design controls with a focus on unmet clinical needs, intended use, and product requirements.
  • Product development background in designing and developing circulatory pumps highly preferred. Class II or Class III Medical device product development experience.
