About the role:

Boston Scientific’s Vascular Therapies business is experiencing rapid growth, resulting in a robust project and product pipeline. An R&D Manager - Exploratory is needed to develop technology strategy, execute exploratory projects, and to support and develop an engineering team. The focus of the role is on leading early-stage exploratory projects evaluating new technologies and clinical applications to support pipeline development and future investments within the Vascular Therapies business. In this leadership role, you will guide a team of engineers and technicians and collaborate with senior technical staff across product development teams to plan and execute initiatives aimed at de-risking new technologies and investments. 

 

The ideal candidate combines technical expertise with strong leadership, project management, and stakeholder engagement skills to foster innovation and deliver breakthrough results.

 

Work Mode:

At Boston Scientific, we value collaboration and synergy. This role follows an onsite work model, requiring employees to be present in our Maple Grove, MN office, at least four to five days per week.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Facilitate development through definition of unmet need, specification development, prototyping, and in vitro and vivo evaluation, and clinical feedback.
  • Partner with physicians, upstream marketing/strategy, and Medical Affairs to define unmet clinical needs.
  • Prioritization: Taking stakeholder input, agreeing to priorities, ensuring alignment towards meeting critical goals.
  • Participate in setting business strategy and product pipeline recommendations.
  • Design, prototype and develop novel solutions to enable new therapies, improve performance, and increase ease of use in clinical procedures.
  • Create and present strategic product development recommendations to divisional leadership.
  • Establish and maintain partnerships with OEM suppliers, development partners, and other vendors as projects require.
  • Provides guidance and training to staff, assists subordinates in attaining career goals, motivates individuals to achieve results, and recruits and maintains a high-quality staff.
  • Direct supervision of team of 3-6 engineers and technicians.

 

Required qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Engineering
  • Experience: 8+ years total experience in R&D function in medical devices
  • Highly organized, energetic, self-starter who exhibits strong communication skills with cross-functional team members, project leads, and physician advisors.
  • Strong ability to learn new knowledge areas, including anatomy, physiology, and clinical research
  • Direct/functional people management experience
  • Travel to internal sites for collaboration and to customer sites to support products.  Approximately 20% or less.

 

Preferred qualifications:

  • Preferred engineering disciplines: Biomedical, Mechanical, Materials. Advanced degree preferred.
  • Experience with processing equipment to build catheter-based devices and/or nitinol implants
  • Project Management and/or Technical Leadership experience a plus

Compensation will be commensurate with demonstrable level of experience and training, pertinent education including licensure and certifications, among other relevant business or organizational needs. At BSC, it is not typical for an individual to be hired near the bottom or top of the anticipated salary range listed above.

 

Compensation for non-exempt (hourly), non-sales roles may also include variable compensation from time to time (e.g., any overtime and shift differential) and annual bonus target (subject to plan eligibility and other requirements).
