R&D Manager, WATCHMAN

About the role:
This is an exciting opportunity to join Boston Scientific as Manager of Research & Development responsible for development of future WATCHMAN Left Atrial Appendage Closure (LAAC) products within our Cardiology group. In our WATCHMAN business, we’re committed to advancing stroke prevention therapy through a one-time, minimally invasive procedure that permanently reduces stroke risk for people with non-valvular atrial fibrillation. In this role, you will manage product development efforts to commercialize future LAAC solutions. This role is integral as we build a differentiated portfolio to strengthen WATCHMAN’s leadership position in the LAAC space, drive further adoption in this area and help more patients throughout the world with this therapy.
As a critical member of the WATCHMAN leadership team, based in Maple Grove, MN, you will lead our R&D team responsible for new product development in delivery system technologies. The role collaborates closely with other functions involved in the portfolio and development process, namely Marketing, Project Management, Quality, Clinical, Regulatory, Process Development, Design Assurance and Operations. We are seeking a leader who can drive a transformative, collaborative, and cross-functional approach to maintain a strong culture, accelerate innovation and create a collaborative and equitable work environment.
Work Mode
This role follows an onsite work model, requiring employees to be in our local office at least four days per week. This position will be based in Maple Grove, MN.
Responsibilities:
- Recruit, coach, and develop engineering talent to meet immediate business needs, while building a robust pipeline of technical expertise and leadership.

- Empower and support teams in problem-solving to achieve efficient technical decisions.

- Assess project team needs for implant-based initiatives and collaborate with technical leads and program managers to ensure successful technology and product development.
- Challenge and support teams to execute an accelerated Product Life Cycle Process for all LAAC Implant projects, with a strong focus on agile development and competitive commercialization timelines.
- Provide direction and guidance to team members who exercise significant latitude and independence in their assignments. Supervise non-exempt employees and external contract design firm employees as needed.
- Build strategic partnerships across Boston Scientific to advance departmental and organizational objectives.
- Support cross-functional teams through project-specific budget cycles, including monitoring, developing, and adjusting expenditures to meet business objectives.
- Keep the organization's vision and values at the forefront of decision-making and actions.
- Support and reinforce the divisional and corporate quality system.
- Ensure the product solutions and pipeline align with our vision of advancing meaningful innovation while meeting business objectives.
- Eliminate barriers for project teams and advocate for appropriate financial investments and team resources.
Minimum Required Qualifications:
- BS degree in Engineering or applicable technical field.
- 6+ years of engineering experience involved with the product development process. Strong preference for someone who has worked in the Medical Device industry.
- 1+ years of experience in leadership or management of engineering teams.
- Ability to connect authentically with all levels and types of employees. Drive high levels of engagement and build a culture of high performance and inclusion.
- Willingness to work onsite at our Maple Grove, MN site
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previously held a leadership role on a technical team that was successful in developing and launching a medical device.
- Known as a subject matter expert and/or mentor
- Experience with customer engagement, collaboration and interface, support of clinical trials, advisory boards, customer field visits, innovation visits, etc.
- Experience in product portfolio management; evaluating customer needs, investment decisions & trade-offs, evaluating performance and course-correcting.
- Proven ability to drive change successfully.
- Passionate about creating an environment that fosters curiosity, continuous improvement, learning, accountability, knowledge sharing, problem solving, speaking candidly, and creates a safe environment for people to challenge.
- Strong track record of working globally and cross-functionally across an organizational matrix. Builds strong stakeholder relationships.
- Ability to attract & develop diverse talent, especially in developing new capabilities in a team needed to meet constantly evolving business strategies.
- Experience managing vendor/partner relationships involved in any aspect of the product development process.
- Leader adept at analysis and utilization of disciplined, product development principles and ensuring a strong culture of adherence.

Minimum Salary: $ 99100
Maximum Salary: $ 188300
The anticipated compensation listed above and the value of core and optional employee benefits offered by Boston Scientific (BSC) – see www.bscbenefitsconnect.com--will vary based on actual location of the position and other pertinent factors considered in determining actual compensation for the role. Compensation will be commensurate with demonstrable level of experience and training, pertinent education including licensure and certifications, among other relevant business or organizational needs. At BSC, it is not typical for an individual to be hired near the bottom or top of the anticipated salary range listed above.
Compensation for exempt roles may also include variable compensation, i.e., annual bonus target and long-term incentives (subject to plan eligibility and other requirements).
