About the role:
Are you skilled at revealing material characteristics that help explain physical and mechanical behavior? We have an exciting opportunity for an R&D Materials Science Engineer III working in a materials testing and characterization lab. This role will operate under moderate supervision conducting materials characterizations in support of medical device product development projects and commercial product sustaining projects (e.g., failure analysis and process troubleshooting). Medical device products primarily supported include: interventional cardiology and peripheral intervention, minimally invasive vascular access, diagnostic, and implantable devices. Service is also provided to other global Boston Scientific medical device franchises and product teams. This role involves conducting hands-on experimentation with light microscopy, metallography, mechanical (tensile) testing, microhardness testing, corrosion resistance analysis, and SEM/EDS (scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectroscopy) instruments in service to internal company engineering teams.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Research, design, and execute analytical engineering approaches and test plans for materials, components, sub-assemblies, processes and/or product. The situations and technology may sometimes be complex and dynamic.
  • Conduct hands-on testing, guide support personnel, and coordinate other analytical activities that contribute to the overall engineering evaluation.
  • Adhere to department, site, and global SOPs when conducting work tasks.
  • May write and submit intellectual property (patents).
  • Maintain detailed, clear, and compliant documentation throughout all phases of the engineering evaluation workflow.
  • Responsible for laboratory engineering documentation such as equipment operation, maintenance, and calibration procedures, test methods, procedures, and FDA cGMP-compliant experimentation records and reports.
  • Perform or guide equipment qualifications and test method validations.
  • Execute NCEP and CAPA procedures and documentation for laboratory non-compliance events.
  • Perform technical peer review of documentation from lab team members.
  • Determine appropriate action by brainstorming and considering possible engineering approaches and tools and their impact to the lab client problem, product or process using academic knowledge, information resources, accumulated experiential learning, judgment, and precedents.
  • Receives a moderate level of guidance and direction from lab management, lab subject matter experts, team members, and lab clients.

Required qualifications:

  • BS in Materials Science and Engineering with emphasis on metal and/or polymer materials analysis
  • Required minimum years of industry work experience: 4 years with BS, 3 years with MS, 1 year with PhD degree.
