About the role
Boston Scientific Interventional Oncology & Embolization (IO&E) is the market leader in therapeutics and tools for interventional radiologists, featuring Y90 microspheres, ablation devices, embolic devices and a selection of ancillary products.
We are looking for a dynamic Senior R&D Engineer to support the growing TheraSphere Y90 franchise. In this role, you will make important contributions to support and lead new product development and exploratory initiatives on the TheraSphere Y90 R&D team. You will help drive the translation of emerging clinical insights and advanced technologies into next-generation therapies, expanding the therapeutic applications of radioembolization beyond current standards of care.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Successfully completes scientific and technical work in one or more of the following: exploratory research, technology development, product design and development, test of materials, preparation of specifications, research investigation (animal and clinical studies), and report preparation.
- May interface with Physicians to identify needs and to obtain feedback on concepts and performance of new devices and to translate customer needs into product concepts.
- Evaluate scientific literature in support of new concepts or products, determining emerging technology and clinical trends, and sharing learnings with R&D and cross-functional teams.
- Develops solutions to diverse engineering problems of high complexity which require the regular use of ingenuity and creativity. Leverages internal/external partners as necessary to achieve project objectives.
- Conduct feasibility studies, develop prototypes, and perform testing and validation to optimize product designs.
- Investigate failure modes, perform root cause analyses, and develop solutions to address technical challenges. Ensure compliance with relevant regulatory requirements and standards.
- Prepare and review engineering documentation, including technical reports, design history files, and regulatory submissions. Present project updates and technical insights to stakeholders.
- May contribute to the support of clinical trials, including development of clinical trial documentation, engagement with the FDA, and providing on-site support as needed during trial enrollment.
- Contribute to intellectual property strategy and develop new intellectual property.
- Work independently to plan and schedule own activities necessary to meet timelines.
- Creates a strong team culture around high expectations and high performance.
- May train and/or provide work direction to technicians or junior engineers.
Required qualifications:
- BS or above in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
- 6+ years of engineering experience with a bachelor’s degree, 4+ years with a master’s degree, or 2+ years with a PhD.
- Experience leading Exploratory projects to develop new Technologies or Therapies where there are many unknowns – comfortable operating in grey space.
- Passion for understanding and solving problems with an ability to quickly learn and understand complex technical, scientific, and clinical subject matter.
- Exhibits excellent communication and presentation skills, with an ability to build credibility with internal and external experts in the medical space.
- A driven individual who is proactive and takes accountability to work effectively with global cross-functional team members to plan, schedule and execute activities necessary to meet business objectives and project timelines.
Preferred qualifications:
- PhD or MS in an Engineering discipline with academic or industry experience in cancer research and/or development of cancer therapies.
- Strong scientific and technical writing skills, exemplified by a proven ability to clearly communicate complex technical concepts through scientific publications, regulatory submissions, or similar documents.
