Boston Scientific’s Stone Management franchise is the global market leader with a broad portfolio of tools and solutions for the treatment of Kidney Stones. The R&D Manager for the Stone Management franchise will lead a technical team in new and ongoing device development programs for systems (capital and disposable) across multiple disease states. This role will provide technical leadership within our Stone Franchise and drive technical excellence in product development execution in core Stone devices, exploratory development, fluid management and laser therapies. The ideal candidate will exhibit a blend of technical and biomedical knowledge, business acumen, coaching ability, fact-based decision making, project management expertise, and collaborative stakeholder management.



  • Manages functional deliverables and ensures technical excellence for product development.

  • Provides guidance and training to staff, assists subordinates in attaining career goals, motivates individuals to achieve results, and recruits and maintains a high quality staff.

  • Collaboratively determines project staff assignments and schedules work to meet completion dates and R&D deliverables.

  • Provides guidance and approval regarding technical strategies and approaches.

  • Monitors and evaluates project and department progress and results. Leads a team of employees in the achievement of organizational goals.  Guide, coach, direct, and develop direct reports, and if applicable, drive those practices throughout their organization.

  • Assists in and/or completes the development of budgets and monitors spending.

  • Works with project managers to understand priorities and plans resource and time allocation accordingly.  Assists in and/or determines appropriate staff levels, schedules and resources. 

  • Maintains and enhances cross-functional team relationships.

  • Works cross-functionally in identifying and resolving technical issues and challenging tradeoffs.

  • Foster a diverse workplace that enables all participants to contribute to their full potential in pursuit of organizational objectives.

  • Monitor and ensure compliance with company policies and procedures (e.g. federal/country and regulatory requirements).

  • Communicates clearly, credibly, and decisively to senior level leadership both within the division and across the matrix.

  • Shares and propagates ideas/initiatives across group and celebrates accomplishments and growth


What We’re Looking For:

  • 7+ years technical product development in lead roles

  • Bachelors degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Systems, Biomedical Engineering or similar required.

  • Master of Science or Business degree preferred.  

  • Passion for understanding and solving problems for end users using technology and product development efforts

  • Experience in people development - coaching and empowering engineers to achieve technical excellence in product design and project execution

  • Experience developing single use and capital medical equipment with system engineering with robust understanding of product development lifecycle and requirements management

  • Proven skills in cross-functional collaboration and enabling highly effective project teams

  • Proven track record of motivating teams and functions to achieve above plan performance

  • Skilled at working across sites and cultures, managing and influencing both technology and people development to meet the needs of a business

  • Strong business acumen and strategic thought leadership

  • Ownership and communication of R&D budgets and strong partnership with Program Management, Marketing and Design Assurance to achieve strategic and tactical goals

  • Spends time with users to gain market & clinical insights and build relationships with key physicians

  • Ability to travel domestically and globally
