About the role:

The Health Economics & Market Access (HEMA) Director will develop and direct the global strategy and methodologies for effective health economics and market access activities across all key development and marketed products in our Urology and Pelvic Health division. Efforts are designed to support the value proposition for Boston Scientific products and to increase market access and patient access to care. The role involves collaboration with internal and external teams, with participation in upstream and downstream activities across all Urology and Pelvic Health Franchises, including new business development. In addition, the role involves assessing and representing HEMA priorities, opportunities and risks for Urology and Pelvic Health technologies and developing and securing support for reimbursement strategies at the divisional senior management level and across multiple general managers within the business. Finally, the Director will manage multiple teams of field-based HEMA managers supporting coding and patient access at the practice level, as well as securing payer coverage and reimbursement and addressing procedural economic concerns at the provider level.

 

Your responsibilities include:

  • Directing the development and implementation of strategic reimbursement, market access and evidence plans for key global Urology and Pelvic Health products.
  • Managing the team to ensure execution through health economics outcomes, market access initiatives and stakeholder engagement actions.
  • Utilizing business and HCP inputs to define global HEMA strategy, objectives and budget. 
  • Directing strategic health economics needs for Urology and Pelvic Health products, including planning for global economic/reimbursement dossier submissions for private and public coverage of key technologies.
  • Identifying and prioritizing key global products where HEMA strategy will be important for product success in development and post-launch.
  • Representing HEMA priorities and advising senior management on implications of global, national, state and local HEMA and legislative changes effecting Urology and Pelvic Health products through participation on the divisional management team and on general managers’ business planning teams.
  • Budgeting for all division-wide HEMA resources, including defining and securing needed resources to accomplish business strategic objectives and adhering to established budget guidelines. 
  • Providing HEMA assessments for new technology acquisitions and internally developed Urology and Pelvic Health products. Ensuring that business or product development opportunity assessments have incorporated appropriate evidence generation strategies and resources to successfully execute according to deal model or business plan specifications. Identifying HEMA risks and developing mitigation strategies for new business or internal product development opportunities. 
  • Directing development and implementation of all HEMA materials and training for both internal (sales) and external customers (including clinicians, hospitals, purchasing groups and payers) across all divisional product lines. Ensuring collaboration with other functions (e.g., marketing, R&D, clinical, etc.). 
  • Establishing/maintaining a network of key health policy and specialty society leaders for all specialties relevant to the division. Representing and promoting BSC with relevant stakeholders (governmental bodies, funding and reimbursement groups, ISPOR, KOLs, etc.), through market access initiatives and stakeholder engagement activities, demonstrating clinical and health economics outcomes and contributing to the creation of innovative value propositions.   
  • Providing strategic guidance for economic and pricing forecasts and modeling of novel products in the Definition and Scale-up phases of technology development for key Urology and Pelvic Health products across all franchises. 
  • Directing and supervising internal staff as necessary to implement the above strategic and tactical initiatives across multiple franchises. Developing senior team members acting as a coach and supervising the development of other junior resources. 
  • Understanding of internal and external data resources that can be utilized to quantify current market dynamics, drive product adoption, and develop value messaging that can differentiate Boston Scientific in the market with external customers.
  • Understanding health economic research methods, endpoints, and publication strategies that would support product adoption by economic stakeholders, HCPs, and payers.
  • Ensuring that the field HEMA teams have the tools and information required to successfully support customers utilizing Boston Scientific Urology and Pelvic Health technologies on label and, when necessary, advocating for coding, coverage and reimbursement with payers.
  • Owning development and implementation of market access strategy for all divisional franchises, including establishing alternative payment or revenue models that recognize the clinical and economic value of BSC products. Establishing strategies and tactical plans to gain market access for all new divisional therapies.
  • Collaborating with IDN Leadership, Corporate Accounts and Global Healthcare Solutions teams to ensure consistent and effective messaging of products’ value propositions across sales channels and franchises.

 

What we’re looking for:

Basic Qualifications

  • Minimum 10+ years of solid work experience with management experience.
  • Masters or doctoral degree (e.g., MS, MPH, MBA, PhD, Dr PH, JD) or equivalent required. Formal training in health economics, public health, health services research, policy analysis, epidemiology, biostatistics, health care administration or related discipline preferred. 
  • The successful candidate will have excellent leadership, management and technical skills in the areas of health economics and market access. The position requires the candidate to be current in the field and able to work in a wide array of settings.  Must be able to work at many levels within the organization with a minimal amount of direction.
  • Must be able to contribute at a business leadership level, thinking always of HEMA objectives but providing business-level input even beyond HEMA role.
  • Experience in health economics, health insurance reimbursement and/or outcomes research, preferably related to the medical device or pharmaceutical industry. 

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated knowledge of U.S. and global healthcare systems including expertise in health care financing, reimbursement policies related to the device industry, and technology assessment. 
  • Ability to interpret and integrate business strategies into actionable, value-added health economics and reimbursement initiatives. 
  • Successful leadership, project management and presentation skills, including proven ability to manage through a “highly matrixed” environment. 
  • Experience working as an internal or external consultant with responsibility for line customers. Preferably in the medical device or pharmaceutical industry.
  • Experience managing a call center, preferably one tasked with communicating with insurers on behalf of patients and providers.
  • Outstanding communications and interpersonal skills including developing relationships at all levels in an organization and directly influencing business objectives. 
  • Demonstrated ability to make effective decisions independently and to work in a fast-paced matrix environment.
  • Willingness to travel approximately 30%.
