About the role:

Responsible for the financial reporting of Boston Scientific’s global tax position. Requires in-depth knowledge of GAAP literature related to income tax accounting and internal controls as well as global tax laws and the Boston Scientific organizational structure. Monitors trends in accounting and communicates the tax impact of these trends to senior management.  Overall responsibility for setting corporate tax accounting policy and assessing the tax consequence of other financial reporting policies. Performance directly impacts BSC’s ability to avoid material misstatement of its financial results and avoid material weaknesses under Sarbanes Oxley.  Participates with other members of tax leadership in planning the company's operations to minimize taxes, consistent with overall corporate objectives. Shares knowledge and collaborates across the tax organization in support of our Purpose.


Key responsibilities include:

  • Overall responsibility for accounting for income taxes including calculation of the interim and year-end tax provision and balance sheet tax accounts. Ensures that necessary reserves are established for all worldwide tax exposures material to the company’s financial statements. Develops the tax footnote and other required SEC tax disclosures. Reviews with senior management.
  • Establishes, interprets and executes all tax accounting policies. Assesses the tax consequence of other financial reporting policies. Establishes materiality thresholds for tax accounts and ensures consistency in application.
  • Responsible for the development and maintenance of effective internal controls within the Corporate Tax function. Ensures Sarbanes Oxley compliance.
  • Manages relationship with independent auditors to avoid differences of opinion and minimize cost overruns. Works with auditors to assess and efficiently implement new accounting standards. Develops procedures and systems to address changes.
  • Selects and implements information systems that improve the quality, accuracy and efficiency of tax accounting. Continuously strives to improve tax accounting processes. Develops plans for integrating acquired companies into our tax accounting systems.
  • Keeps the organization's vision and values at the forefront of decision making and action.
  • Communicates effectively at all levels driving organizational alignment with overall vision, direction, objectives and strategies. 
  • Builds strategic partnerships to further departmental and organizational objectives. Interacts internally and externally with executive level management, outside regulatory agencies, customers, vendors and/or suppliers.
  • Creates an entrepreneurial environment and demonstrates effective change leadership.

  • Provides general direction to managers, exempt specialists and non-exempt support in various areas, groups and/or operations.


What we’re looking for:


Minimal qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Taxation or Accounting
  • 10+ years relevant tax experience (in public accounting or industry)
  • Demonstrated managerial experience supervising teams of 5 or more people
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively drive change in a global organization.
  • Excellent coaching, personnel development and leadership skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills


Preferred qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Taxation and/or CPA
  • 5+ years tax experience within med-tech industry
  • Broad exposure international tax issues including transfer pricing
  • Demonstrated experience supervising multiple independent teams
