About the role:

The Director of Technical Accounting and Special Projects holds a pivotal role within the Corporate Accounting team, directly reporting to the SVP, Global Corporate Controller and Chief Accounting Officer. Leading a team of 8 professionals, including managers and senior accountants, this role oversees the Technical Accounting Center of Excellence (COE) and the Company’s Global SOX 404 team. The COE's primary focus encompasses complex accounting areas such as revenue recognition, lessee/lessor accounting, stock-based compensation, derivatives and hedging instruments, debt financing, factoring arrangements, VPPAs, consolidated global cash flow statement, and related forecasting and planning. Collaborating closely with BSC's global accounting teams, the COE determines the appropriate accounting treatment for significant and/or unusual transactions. Additionally, the role involves managing global accounting policies, facilitating policy alignment assessments for new acquisitions, implementing new accounting standards, and partnering in global initiatives like ERP system and AI implementations.   In addition, this role will partner with the strategic investments technical accounting team and support technical accounting for Medsurg strategic investments.  

This role interfaces with various departments including Corporate Accounting, FP&A, Tax, Business Development and Legal, enjoying high visibility among senior leadership and actively contributes to strategic Corporate Finance leadership meetings. Focused on team development, the Director strives to elevate team members and cultivate a culture of excellence.


Your responsibilities include: 

  • Develop and mentor team members, identifying opportunities for growth and skill enhancement to elevate performance and foster a culture of excellence.
  • Lead the Technical Accounting COE, ensuring alignment with global accounting standards and internal policies. Offer strategic accounting guidance to business partners and senior leaders to assess the impact of proposed transactions and influence decision making.
  • Oversee the COE accounting close processes including review of technical accounting memos, ensuring the accuracy of SEC related disclosures, and adherence to the Company’s internal control processes.  
  • Proactively monitor new accounting and reporting guidance affecting the company, including preparation of executive-level summaries and detailed project implementation plans.
  • Provide senior oversight of the Global SOX 404 program and business controls implementation for project Magellan and support the team in setting strategic direction.
  • Work collaboratively with the MedSurg business development department on assessing the technical aspects of new strategic investments, where needed.
  • Lead and collaborate cross-functionally to implement new accounting standards, including assessing the related financial reporting implications.
  • Oversee the global accounting policies function; assist with policy alignment as part of integration of acquired companies. 
  • Share best practices and seek to continually improve processes; take initiative in business partnering activities.
  • Act as primary liaison for internal/external auditors for all areas of responsibility.
  • Lead or participate in special projects as needed.

 
What we're looking for: 
Required Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred
  • CPA required
  • Minimum of 15 years of relevant experience, through combination of Big Four and/or industry
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP particularly in areas of revenue recognition, lease accounting, accounting for stock-based compensation, and accounting for derivatives/hedging instruments
