About this role:

As part of the Endoscopy R&D team, this position’s primary responsibilities include leading a group of R&D engineers through exploratory and technology development projects with a polymer science, chemistry, and/or drug device combination focus in Boston Scientific’s Endoscopy Portfolio. You will oversee the development and management of the staff resources and processes required to ensure functional excellence and ensure new technologies are ready for product development on time and in high quality. You will provide portfolio strategy input to multiple franchises with short, mid-term and long-term views. You will be tasked with building and empowering a strong team capable of delivering multi-project needs for the business.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Identifies future technology and intellectual property critical to future business growth and drives implementation.  
  • Ensures knowledge driven product development and functional excellence is exhibited in all exploratory and technology development projects.
  • Drives technical projects of major magnitude and scope. Work is expected to result in the development of new or refined technologies, products, materials, processes, equipment, and/or scientific method to broaden BSC’s Intellectual Property in key strategic areas.
  • Ensures new technology development is aligned with franchise priorities and that technologies are de-risked and ready for product development.
  • Ensures exploratory and technology development is focused on solving significant unmet needs.
  • Coordinates formal and informal technical reviews.
  • Assesses competitive technologies.  Participates in the due diligence process.
  • Develops detailed work plans, objectives, schedules, project estimates, resource plans, and status reports. Monitors and troubleshoots performance and schedule issues.
  • Manages a materials testing lab that services multiple divisions with Boston Scientific.
  • Builds relationships with and effectively collaborates cross-functionally and with external development partners.
  • Hires, develops, and retains top talent and creates succession plans.
  • Represents organization as a prime contact in polymer related matters on contracts or projects. Interacts with senior internal and external personnel on significant matters often requiring coordination between organizations. Uses discretion, diplomacy and tact to resolve difficult situations. May escalate serious issues to manager.
  • Ensures regulatory compliance to GMP’s of all medical device regulatory agencies (e.g., FDA, ISO and MDR).
  • Establish and support a work environment of continuous improvement that supports BSC’s Quality Policy, Quality System and the appropriate regulations for the area they support. Ensure all employees are trained to do their work and their training is documented.

 

Requirements:

  • Engineering degree in a relevant discipline, Plastics, Polymers, or Material Science desired.
  • 3+ years’ experience as a technical manager in a highly regulated industry.
  • Minimum 7+ years' experience in medical device product development.
  • Proven Leadership and Management of a technical group providing coaching and development.
  • Track record of executing exploratory and technology development projects that become successful products.
