Our Research and Development team is all about building the future of the operating room for urologists. As the industry leader in surgical kidney stone treatment, we are on a mission to empower surgeons to treat more cases, more efficiently, with better outcomes – to help patients in need get back to their daily lives.  Our team is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Principal R&D Engineer to serve as a Technical Lead for a single use product within the Visualization Franchise; a rapidly growing franchise actively building on the global success of the LithoVue™Single-Use Digital Flexible Ureteroscope.

 

The Principal Engineer will bring strong, proven technical and leadership skillsets and apply these to one or more key products in development.  They will be responsible for leading all aspects of product development including technical planning, translating user needs into product specifications, design inputs, product design, feasibility studies, verification and validation of the product.  The candidate will work closely with other functions such as product management, project management, process development and quality in order to design a product that fulfills customer, manufacturing, service, market and regulatory requirements.

In addition to project execution responsibilities, the candidate will have opportunities to shape the franchise strategy for next-generation imaging products. This will include engagement in Voice of Customer activities, prototyping, feasibility studies and performing necessary tradeoffs (performance, reliability, cost, schedule, manufacturability, etc.) of various design concepts.

 

Your responsibilities include:

  • Leading a multi-disciplinary design team for Visualization SUDs (single use devices) to the successful, on-time completion of project goals & product commercialization
  • Ensuring product designs are cost effective, designed for manufacturability, and exhibit a high degree of quality and reliability via best in class verification test plans.
  • Creating and sustaining highly effective partnerships with project management, quality, process development and other cross-functional partners to develop and maintain project strategy, schedules and manage risk
  • Driving close collaboration with cross-functional members to characterize performance, demonstrate safety, efficacy and compliance with relevant requirements and standards and support regulatory filings
  • Guiding the team through the completion of product development activities and associate deliverables such as: Design History File compilation, translation / creation and documenting of requirements, ideation / prototyping, technical risk mitigation, verification testing and reports, design validation studies, risk management documentation, design reviews and to support the compilation of documentation to enable regulatory submissions.
  • Solving complex technical problems using theoretical analysis, experimentation and problem-solving methodologies to make data-based design decisions
  • Interfacing with physicians and medical staff to identify needs and to obtain feedback on concepts and performance of new devices and to translate customer needs into product concepts
  • Providing technical mentorship and coaching to junior engineers to assist with their development and building of the talent pipeline

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • 8+ years in product development roles leading technical teams to the successful commercialization of new products
  • Degree in Engineering.  Bachelors required; Masters preferred
  • Working knowledge of Design Control and/or development of products in a regulated medical device industry
  • Skilled problem solver, proficient in problem solving methodologies (i.e. Six Sigma, DOE, etc.)
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and documentation skills are required.
  • Takes initiative and acts quickly to drive solutions

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of medical technologies including devices, diagnostics, and imaging systems that integrate hardware, firmware and software 
  • Experience tracking technology developments for detection and sensor technologies, particularly with respect to imaging sensors, and creating development strategies 
  • Experience navigating tradeoffs between illumination, collection optics and image corrections software to optimize the design of imaging systems 
  • Working knowledge of mechanical design principles including adhesives, materials and sterilization requirements
  • Proficient at performing design analysis, such as tolerance stack-ups, strength of materials, risk analysis, and statistical evaluations.
  • Experience with common manufacturing methodologies, technologies, and materials, such as; injection molded part design, common materials employed in medical devices, and other manufacturing processes
  • Ability to effectively work within a requirements management system, such as Doors, Cognition Cockpit
  • Knowledge in utilizing engineering simulation software such as Ansys for FEA and CFD
  • Knowledge of CAD software and ASME Y14.5 GD&T
  • Track record of strong cross-functional collaboration, influence without authority, and project management enabling highly effective project teams
  • Understanding of IEC60601 requirements/constraints for mechanical system design is preferred
