  • A highly technical leadership role supporting the development of next generation materials and formulations for products within the Urology and Pelvic Health Prostate Health Franchise



  • Lead the development of novel materials to improve and expand an existing product portfolio by addressing unmet needs
  • Lead technical resources through the end-to-end new product development process, taking devices from exploratory concepts to full commercialization
  • Serve as a hydrogel subject matter expert within the division, supporting the continuous activities required to sustain multiple existing product lines.
  • Solve complex technical problems using theoretical analysis, experimentation, and problem-solving methodologies to make data-based design decisions.
  • Design and execute engineering studies to characterize performance, demonstrate safety, efficacy and compliance with relevant requirements and standards.
  • Create and maintain design control documentation required to meet Boston Scientific’s Product Lifecycle Process (PLCP) requirements and support regulatory filings
  • Provide technical mentorship and coaching to junior engineers to assist with their development and building of the talent pipeline
  • Partner with project management office, marketing, and other cross-functional partners to develop and maintain project strategy and schedules and manage risks


Job Scope and Leveling Guidelines

  • Knowledge: A seasoned, experienced professional with a complete understanding of chemistry, materials science, and their applications within the medical device space.  General knowledge of other related disciplines, such as mechanical and manufacturing engineering and are preferred.
  • Problem Solving: Capable of developing novel solutions to a variety of complex technical problems using a methodical and data-driven approach. Exercises authority and judgment within generally defined practices and policies in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.
  • Planning and Organization: Develops plans and strategies to address technical challenges and mitigate risk. Works with cross-functional team members and project managers to define project strategies, timelines and manage the successful completion of project deliverables
  • Discretion/Latitude; Supervision Received; Decision Making: Independent, self-starting resource capable of working on one or more high-priority, urgent projects. Develops and implements technical solutions. Interprets, executes and recommends modifications to company policies and interfaces with other franchises and divisions as required. Assists in establishing departmental policies and procedures.
  • Business Relationships and Project Management: Establishes and cultivates a wide range of business relationships to facilitate completion of assignments. May interact with vendors. Participates in determining goals and objectives for projects. May lead projects within the function or department and/or represents a specialized field in larger project teams. Influences middle management on business solutions.
  • Impact: Leads the technical team through the completion of complex programs and projects.


What we’re looking for in you 


  • 7+ years product development in roles leading product development on the successful commercialization of new products, preferably in a regulated industry.
  • Degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, or mechanical engineering with a materials science concentration is required.  Masters or PhD. preferred.
  • Excellent hands-on experience; prototyping, relevant lab experience (test method development, product usability testing, verification, and failure analysis) is required.
  • Previous experience understanding clinical usage, solving problems with a customer-centric approach, and working with commercial partners is required.


  • Previous experience with the development and commercialization of medical devices preferred.
  • Knowledge of hydrogels, their applications within medical devices, and previous experience with their development is preferred.
  • Track record of strong cross-functional collaboration, influence without authority, and project management enabling highly effective project teams. 
  • Proven self-starter who runs towards critical issues, ambiguous requirements, or loosely defined challenges with a demonstrated ability to rally teams to achieve business results.
  • Hands-on experience managing suppliers and/or contract manufacturers.
  • 10% Travel required
