About the role:
The Senior Manager, R&D – Solutions & Innovation (Endoscopy Sustaining) role leads a highly experienced team focused on solving the most complex technical challenges across the Endoscopy portfolio and transforming technical insights into meaningful product improvements, design enhancements, and portfolio value creation.
Over the past 3 years, Sustaining R&D execution has transitioned to a global capability across Marlborough, Costa Rica, Ireland and India creating a strong global delivery model. This Marlborough-based team is designed to complement that model, serving as a high-leverage group focused on advanced problem solving, cross-portfolio technical leadership, and the development of product enhancements that deliver new clinical and commercial value.
In the near term, this team will engage the most critical and complex issues impacting performance across the portfolio. Through that work, they will enable the longer-term objective of building a robust pipeline of iterative innovations, design improvements, and market-facing product enhancements.
This leader will direct a team of senior, principal, and fellow-level engineers to operate across manufacturing sites, driving both immediate impact and sustained innovation capability.
Key responsibilities will include:
Enterprise Problem Solving & Technical Leadership
- Lead resolution of the most complex, high-impact technical challenges across the portfolio, using these engagements to deepen system-level understanding and drive broader organizational learning
- Establish and embed best-in-class, data-driven problem-solving approaches that can scale across the global Sustaining organization
- Partner with global teams to address critical issues while strengthening long-term technical robustness and design performance
Innovation & Product Enhancement
- Translate insights from system performance, field experience, and technical challenges into actionable product improvements
- Identify and drive iterative design changes and enhancements that can be commercialized
- Partner with Marketing and upstream R&D to ensure alignment on value creation opportunities
- Build and mature a pipeline of product and design improvements that support long-term portfolio growth
Technical Leadership & Talent Leverage
- Lead a highly experienced team (Principal/Fellow-level + emerging SMEs), maximizing impact over scale
- Create an environment where senior technical experts can operate at full effectiveness across multiple programs
- Develop next-generation technical leaders through exposure to complex, high-visibility challenges
- Ensure strong technical rigor, mentorship, and knowledge sharing
Cross-Functional & Global Influence
- Operate as a central integrator across R&D, Quality, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, and Commercial teams
- Influence decision making at senior levels by translating technical issues into clear business impact
- Drive alignment on priorities, resources, and trade-offs across sites and functions
Systems, Tools, and Ways of Working
- Define and deploy best practices for problem solving, decision making, and prioritization
- Improve organizational response to emerging risks through better visibility and structured execution
- Contribute to the evolution of Sustaining R&D operating models and toolsets
Required qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Biomedical, or related); advanced degree preferred
- 10+ years of experience in medical device or regulated industry
- 5+ years of direct people leadership, including senior technical staff
- Demonstrated success leading complex technical problem solving and cross-functional initiatives
Preferred Qualifications:
- Proven ability to lead through highly ambiguous, high-pressure situations
- Track record of driving both issue resolution and product/design improvements
- Deep understanding of medical device design controls and regulatory environment
- Strong data-driven decision-making and problem-solving expertise (e.g., Six Sigma, DOE)
- Ability to influence senior stakeholders and operate across organizational boundaries
