About the role:

The Vice President, Research and Development for the Urology and Pelvic Health business leads a global multi-site and multi-competency technical team covering a wide span of technology platforms.  This leader sets the tone for a highly accountable organization focused on execution.  Creating an innovation culture and ensuring that the team has the requisite technical skills are important areas of focus.  This individual is a critical member of the management board of this $1.4B business unit and plays a key role in setting portfolio priorities.  Ideal candidate can be located in Massachusetts or Minnesota.


Your responsibilities include:

  • Key leader that sits on the Urology and Pelvic Health Management Board and contributes insight and input to the broader division strategy.
  • Proactively manages cost, schedule and performance of portfolio investments (exploratory, technology development, product development, and sustaining).
  • Develops and aligns the organization to meet divisional goals. ensures the resources in the organization meet the needs of the project outputs/technologies.
  • Sets performance expectations for the division and ensures accountability to commitments.
  • Champions the utilization of appropriate HR services (i.e., Talent acquisition, succession planning, learning and development, reward and recognition systems) to attract, develop, and retain key talent to meet divisional strategies.
  • Partners externally with universities, venture capitalists, physicians and industry specialists (key opinion leaders) and hospitals to drive innovation.
  • Develops and drives long-term strategic investments and goals of division.
  • Partners internally with New Business Development, Research, Portfolio, and other divisions to foster and drive innovation.
  • Ensures intellectual property security of division.
  • Develops and drives technology roadmaps for the division globally.
  • Supports and reinforces divisional and corporate quality system.
  • Creates and maintains technical centers of excellence, which are comprised of experts who can address divisional and cross-corporate technical issues.
  • Builds a strong global technical community.
  • Optimizes global R&D capability to drive growth.
  • Communicates the mission and vision of the division to the group and to other divisions.
  • Active member of the Technical Excellence Council (TEC) to help shape the global direction of BSC's R&D.
  • Drives Product Life Cycle Process (PLCP) to foster innovation and development excellence.


What we’re looking for:

  • BS degree in Engineering or applicable field required (MS preferred)
  • At least 12 years technical professional experience
  • At least 8 years’ experience directly managing people, including managing/leading a team of Managers and/or Directors
  • Must have strong leadership skills; be innovative, a visionary and challenge the status quo.  Must have demonstrated experience leading through change
  • Hands on knowledge of designing complex medical systems including electrical, software and mechanical systems
  • Hands on experience in phase gated as well as agile development techniques
  • Must have medical device experience;
  • Must have proven experience launching products – front end innovation to include full lifecycle (from exploration to launching commercial products).  Must have technical mapping experience.
  • Portfolio management and process experience required
  • Must have experience working in Global R&D organizations – working with a collection of global technology and product development partners.
