About the role
We are currently seeking an R&D Engineering Fellow with expertise in ultrasound product development to join our R&D Team and provide technical leadership on the design, development and integration of a novel interventional ultrasound device. As a technical leader within the program, you are responsible for optimizing the image quality of the product, including transducer and interconnects integration / optimization, and the development of tools, methods, and infrastructure to tune imaging parameters. In this role, you will lead the investigation and resolution of cross-functional integration issues. You will interface with product management, clinical specialists, and other engineering disciplines (transducer, electrical, systems, hardware, software, mechanical, and biomedical) to drive a product solution that meets customer needs and aligns with company strategy. In addition to the local development team, you will collaborate with colleagues across the Boston Scientific global network to guide systems-of-systems solutions at both the technical and clinical workflow level, working to integrate this product into the broader ecosystem of therapy and navigation products.
Your responsibilities will include:

Serve in a key R&D integrating function, pulling together the technical workstreams related to acoustics, electrical / signal path, and beamforming / image display to deliver an interventional device that satisfies market specification.

Partner with transducer and acoustics experts to define the acoustic stack for the interventional device.

Partner with electrical experts to define the signal path on the interventional device.

Partner with console development team on further defining the full signal path, from transmit to display.

Partner with software and image processing team on design / refinement of GUI elements and post processing algorithms.

Technical leadership in echocardiography

Technical leadership in image performance, including algorithm research and development, pre-clinical and clinical image optimization, verification and validation.

Leadership of product development activities, including design requirements and specifications, test method development, verification and related documentation that complies with medical device regulations, standards and our ISO13485 Quality Management System.

Collaboration with other product teams on ‘systems-of-systems’ program level initiatives.

Collaboration with ultrasound and related technology SMEs across Boston Scientific’s global network.

Maintain knowledge (e.g. publications, conferences) of state-of-the-art and trends in imaging technologies.

Mentorship and coaching of early-career team members to elevate capabilities of R&D Team.

Contribution to IP portfolio, including development of invention disclosures and patent applications.

Required qualifications:

Master’s or PhD degree in relevant engineering or science discipline.

12 years (or 10 years with PhD) experience in medical ultrasound product development, with demonstrated progression of career roles and impact.

Substantial experience in medical ultrasound product development, including as an R&D contributor on multiple products from concept stage through to commercialization.

Expertise in ultrasound physics, signal and image processing.

Experience using fast prototyping software (e.g., MATLAB, Python).

Demonstrated ability to lead and influence a highly technical group.

Excellent oral and written communication skills for multiple levels of an organization.

Experience engaging with clinicians to gain direction and product feedback.

Ability to work in an inclusive, collaborative and fast-paced environment with minimal direction, including on global teams.

Working knowledge of relevant medical device regulations and guidance (e.g., ISO 13484, ISO 14971, IEC 62304, IEC 60601).

Ability to travel (~10%) domestically and internationally.
Preferred qualifications:

Experience in echocardiography and image quality optimization.

Experience with numerical modelling and algorithm development is an asset.
