About this role:
The Surgical Lab Specialist will manage the day-to-day operations of the on-site surgical lab, ensuring it functions as a premier facility for supporting sales representatives, physicians, and R&D teams. This individual will be responsible for coordinating lab activities, maintaining equipment, ensuring compliance with safety standards, and providing expert-level support during product demonstrations, training sessions, and development activities.

 

Your responsibilities will include:
 

Lab Operations Management:

  • Oversee the scheduling and logistics of lab activities, including sales representative training, physician education, and R&D testing.
  • Maintain inventory of surgical instruments, equipment, and consumables, ensuring availability for scheduled activities.
  • Implement and enforce lab safety protocols and cleanliness standards.

Training & Support:

  • Assist in the setup, facilitation, and teardown of hands-on training sessions for sales representatives and physicians.
  • Provide technical expertise and support during product demonstrations and procedural simulations.
  • Serve as a resource to R&D teams, assisting with product testing and prototype evaluations in a surgical setting.

Equipment Maintenance:

  • Ensure all surgical lab equipment is maintained, calibrated, and in proper working order.
  • Coordinate with vendors and service technicians for repairs and preventive maintenance.
  • Stay informed on emerging surgical tools and technologies to maintain state-of-the-art lab capabilities.

Collaboration & Communication:

  • Work closely with Sales, Marketing, R&D, and Education teams to align lab activities with company objectives.
  • Act as a liaison with external vendors, contractors, and visiting physicians.
  • Provide feedback to R&D and product teams based on physician and sales representative interactions in the lab.

Compliance & Reporting:

  • Ensure lab operations comply with company policies, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain accurate records of lab usage, equipment logs, and safety inspections.
  • Prepare reports on lab activities and metrics for management review.

 

Required qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree or Certificate Program: Completion of an accredited surgical technology program, usually offered by community colleges, vocational schools, or military training programs, preferred.
  • 3+ years of experience in a surgical lab, medical device company, or healthcare environment.
  • Strong understanding of surgical procedures, instruments, and medical device technologies.
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across departments and with external stakeholders.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to maintaining a safe, efficient, and high-quality lab environment.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with cadaveric labs and anatomical specimen preparation.
  • Proficiency in lab management software and inventory systems.
  • Familiarity with neuromodulation and spine-related products is a plus.

Working Conditions:

  • Ability to work in a surgical lab environment, including handling anatomical specimens.
  • May require occasional evening or weekend work to support training sessions or events.
  • Physical capability to lift lab equipment and supplies (up to 50 lbs).
