Boston Scientific is seeking a highly motivated R&D Engineer II on a permanent basis to join our Galway team.

Job Purpose:

Responsible for supporting the development and commercialisation of next-generation minimally invasive medical devices for the treatment of coronary artery disease. Working as part of a multidisciplinary New Product Development (NPD) organisation, the R&D Engineer II will contribute to the design, development, verification, regulatory readiness, and commercial launch of innovative coronary intervention technologies across global healthcare markets.

The R&D Engineer II is responsible for providing technical support and design solutions throughout the product development lifecycle, including development verification, performance assessment, design evaluation, regulatory testing, and remediation activities. Under limited supervision, the individual contributes to and delivers design control outputs in accordance with TDP (Technology Development Project) and PDP (Product Development Project) methodologies. The role also partners closely with cross-functional teams including Project Management, Design Assurance / Quality, Regulatory, Clinical, Manufacturing, Marketing, and Sterilisation/Biocompatibility functions to ensure timely delivery of project objectives and successful commercialisation of new technologies. In addition, the engineer may support scientific communication, educational activities, and development of technical materials that promote understanding and appropriate use of Boston Scientific products. 

Key Responsibilities:

• Participate and contribute to project teams, which typically includes the following activities: product design and development, product design troubleshooting and investigation support, report preparation. Provide technical guidance within a team and be an effective communicator within a multidisciplinary and international organisation.
• Work cross-functionally with project management, quality, manufacturing, regulatory, clinical, marketing, biocompatibility, sterility and other functions as required to ensure successful execution of development, verification, validation, regulatory and commercialisation activities.
• Designs and coordinates design verification and validation testing. Summarizes, analyses, draws conclusions from and documents test results.
• Work independently to plan and schedule own activities necessary to meet timelines. Uses initiative to scope and execute tasks and activities by seeking out available data and expertise.

• Demonstrate strong working knowledge of design control through generation of high-quality deliverables. Responsible for generation of design related documentation including prints, BOM’s and specifications and driving their approval through documentation control processes.

• Develop, evaluate and optimise bench-top and simulated-use models used to assess device deliverability and performance, supporting design decision-making and comparative product evaluations.
• Support the development, review and maintenance of product labelling and user-facing documentation, including Instructions for Use (IFUs), patient materials and other product communication content.
• Contribute to product remediation and continuous improvement activities, supporting investigation, assessment and implementation of corrective actions to ensure alignment with evolving project and regulatory requirements.
• Partner with Marketing and cross-functional stakeholders to support the development of technical evidence and marketing materials. Generate technical and competitive assessments that support product positioning, clinical adoption and commercial differentiation.
• Uses design change process to ensure proposed design changes are systematically and thoroughly analyzed, tested or rationalised and documented prior to implementation.
• Work closely with mechanical and analytical test laboratory supporting analytical testing and test method validations.

• Uses structured problem-solving techniques to investigate test failures.

• Support educational and marketing activities to promote the understanding and appropriate use of our products by our customers.

• Support integration of newly acquired technologies/products into Boston Scientific Galway.
• Interfaces with vendors where projects require.

• May train and/or provide work direction to technicians and interns.
• Demonstrates a primary commitment to patient safety and product quality.

Preferred Education & Experience:

• HETAC Level 8 Hons Degree in a relevant Technical Discipline, preferably Mechanical, Polymer, Materials or Biomedical Engineering.
• Strong R&D/Technical experience preferably in the health care industry, minimum 3 years.
• Proven ability to work within a regulated industry environment and with a track record of accomplishments.
• Self-starter with the ability to work independently to plan, schedule and execute activities necessary to meet project timelines to schedule.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with good leadership abilities.
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
